Mechanical alloying, interdiffusion and compaction of nickel and titanium powders

High-energy mechanical mixing of metallic powders can be used to bring about different degrees of elemental layer refinement, tending eventually to atomic-level mixing and complete alloying. The decreasing diffusional distance required to obtain a homogeneous phase allows easier alloying at lower temperatures and for shorter periods of time, and it becomes possible to create and maintain highly refined and metastable structures. In this study, powders were mixed to different degrees and hot compacted. The evolution of structure and properties during heat treatment after consolidation was examined. The interrelation of porosity associated with solid state (anomalously fast) diffusion, with transient liquid formation and with difficulties in compaction is discussed with a view to obtaining bulk materials in a refined or metastable state.
