Effects of steamed grain feeding on the growth and feed efficiency in Japanese black heifers

This study was conducted examine the feeding effect of steamed grain included brown rice for forage on the growth and feed efficiency in Japanese Black Heifers. In total 73 Japanese Black Heifers were divided into 3 groups at 2 farmers, one was fattened conventionally by normal concentrate diets (control group: CG, n=23), two was given diets containing 20% steamed grain as a replacement for part of concentrate dry matter (experimental group1: EG1, n=24), the other was given diets containing 40% steamed grain as a replacement for part of concentrate dry matter (experimental group2: EG2, n=26). Daily gain (DG) at 15-28 month of age was significantly higher in EG2 than in CG and EG1 (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in Dry matter intake (DMI), Feed conversion and the carcass gradig traits. The cost of concentrate diet per DG in fattening period on both farmers was estimated lower in EG2 than in CG, each 30,40yen/DGkg. It was suggested that the replacement of 20% and 40% concentrate diet into steamed grain does not bring any undesirable effects on the growth and the feed efficiency, and can be used for substitutional diet in the fattening Japanese Black Heifers.
