A study on the artificial diet rearing and the egg laying of a silkworm race which does not prefer the artificial diets

The Chinese silkworm race "KW2", possessed by SYSMEX CORPORATION Kobe Japan, does not develop uniformly on the artificial diets, hence, it is maintained on mulberry leaves. However, the suitability to the artificial diet "Silkmate PS", produced by Nosan Corporation Yokohama Japan was tested by rearing the silkworm and producing egg of this race. Nine layings of silkworm egg were brushed separately. It was seen that the percentage of well-developed larvae after 24 hours from the start of rearing depended on parentage. The highest was 89.0%, the lowest was 63.5% and the average was 81.4%. The development of silkworms during the first instar was not uniform. Five batches with the higher percentage of well-developed larvae were selected and the rearings was continued. The 2sup(nd) instar larvae were picked and reared. The percentage of 2sup(nd) instar larvae of these batches varied from 71.4% to 64.8% and the average was 69.5%. The picked larvae developed normally and about 90% of them reached to the 4sup(th) instar. From the 4sup(th) instar larvae moderately developed individuals were selected and continued to rear on the diet till the spinning stage. The silkworms showed good development and the pupation ratios were higher than 96%. From the healthy pupae, 171 females and 135 males were selected for the test. Then 69 moths produced good eggs. The result revealed that "KW2" produced enough number of eggs when it was reared on the artificial diet.
