Dois fatores foram incluídos em um desenho fatorial 2 × 2: socialização (SOC) e tamanho da leitegada (LS) em relação ao número de tetos funcionais na uniformização. As leitegadas (n=189) foram divididas em quatro tratamentos: CONT+0 (leitegadas não socializadas, sem leitão adicional), CONT+1 (com um leitão adicional), Co-M+0 (leitegadas socializadas, sem leitão adicional), Co-M+1 (com um leitão adicional). As fêmeas perderam mais unidades de caliper no grupo +1 do que +0 (-0,52; P=0,04). O número de tetos funcionais não diferiu entre os grupos, mas as fêmeas Co-M tiveram uma maior pontuação de lesão ao desmame (6,55 vs. 4,83; P<0,01), com lesões mais graves nas porções anterior e média do que as CONT (P< 0,01). Two factors were included in a 2 × 2 factorial design: socialization (SOC) and litter size (LS) relative to sow functional teat number at cross-fostering. Litters (n=189) were then assigned to one of four groups: CONT+0 (litters not co-mingled with no additional piglet), CONT+1 (not co-mingled with one additional piglet), Co-M+0 (co-mingled with no additional piglet), Co-M+1 (co-mingled with one additional piglet). Sows lost more Caliper units in +1 group than +0 (-0.52; P=0.04). The number of functional teats did not differ among groups, but Co-M sows had a higher overall lesion score at weaning (6.55 vs. 4.83; P<0.01), with more severe lesions in the anterior and middle portions than CONT (P<0.01). Furthermore, sows +1 had fewer vacant teats throughout lactation (P<0.01). Regarding the number of weaned piglets, no difference was observed for socialization (P=0.84), but +1 groups had 0.67 more piglet than +0 (P<0.01). On the other hand, CONT+0 had the heaviest piglets at weaning (P<0.01). Facial and joint lesions were more frequently observed in Co-M, while CONT groups showed more body scratches (P ≤ 0.04) at weaning. There was no difference among treatments for piglet loss rate (12.58%; P≥0.26). However, the removal rate was more frequent in +1 litters compared to +0 (P<0.01). A significant interaction showed that death due to starvation was higher in CONT+1 than CONT+0 (P<0.01), while did not differ between the Co-M groups (P=0.99). In conclusion, litters formed with one additional piglet relative to functional teat number weaned more piglets, but with lower weight. Litter socialization, may alleviate the impact of high litter size, but shows greater percentages of udder injuries, and facial and joint lesions in weaned piglets.
