Análise fisiológica e espectral de cultivares de soja submetidas à deficiência hídrica na fase reprodutiva | Physiological and spectral analysis of soybean cultivars submitted to water deficit in reproductive stage

A soja é a principal cultura do agronegócio brasileiro, sendo o Brasil o maior produtor mundial da cultura, seguido pelos Estados Unidos. A soja está entre as atividades agrícolas que apresentaram crescimentos mais expressivos nas últimas décadas. Porém, como organismos sésseis, as plantas estão sujeitas a diversos fatores, bióticos e abióticos. A disponibilidade hídrica é o fator climático de maior efeito sobre a produtividade das culturas, seu impacto varia com a espécie, o momento de ocorrência do estresse e sua duração/intensidade, resultando em uma ampla gama de respostas fisiológicas nas plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar cultivares de soja com tolerância diferencial à deficiência hídrica, analisando características ecofisiológicas e hiperespectrais das plantas submetidas a essa condição, visando identificar a magnitude dos efeitos desse estresse sobre as plantas e as características indicadoras da tolerância. Foram conduzidos experimentos em casa de vegetação com as cultivares Embrapa 48 (EMB48 – tolerante à deficiência hídrica), BR 16 (BR16 – sensível à deficiência hídrica) e CD202 IPRO (CD202 – moderadamente tolerante). Os tratamentos foram compostos pela combinação dos genótipos de soja e regimes hídricos. Realizou-se avaliações fisiológicas visando determinar o estresse (conteúdo relativo de água, temperatura foliar, massa seca de parte aérea, área foliar, teor de nitrogênio na parte aérea), as respostas das plantas (condutividade hidráulica, teor relativo de clorofila, fluorescência da clorofila, mecanismos de dissipação de energia e trocas gasosas) e, também, o comportamento espectral das plantas, por meio do qual foram calculados diferentes índices de vegetação. A deficiência hídrica resultou em efeitos sobre os parâmetros avaliados nos diferentes regimes hídricos e cultivares testados, confirmando o efeito do estresse e as diferentes estratégias seguidas pelas cultivares. A cultivar considerada tolerante à deficiência hídrica, demonstrou manutenção do conteúdo relativo de água, otimizando a condutividade hidráulica do xilema, o que permitiu a manutenção da eficiência do Fotossistema II e, consequentemente, de taxas fotossintéticas mais elevadas, apesar da redução do seu crescimento e desenvolvimento, as outras cultivares foram similares. As curvas espectrais de reflectância demonstraram diferença nos teores de pigmentos foliares (clorofilas e carotenoides) perceptíveis na faixa do visível e no conteúdo de água nas plantas indicado no infravermelho médio entre plantas não irrigadas e irrigadas. Alguns índices de vegetação apresentaram capacidade de indicar o estresse nas plantas, principalmente os índices relacionados aos pigmentos foliares. Alguns índices foram eficazes na detecção precoce do estresse, podendo ser percebidos antes dos efeitos fisiológicos se tornarem mais intensos e da ocorrência de murcha visual; portanto poderiam ser úteis na seleção de genótipos ou no manejo da irrigação. Desse modo, diversos parâmetros foram capazes de indicar os efeitos do estresse por deficiência hídrica nas plantas e a tolerância diferencial das cultivares.

Soybean is the main Brazilian agribusiness culture, Brazil is the largest grain producer, followed by the United States. Soybean production is one of the agricultural activities that showed strongest growth in recent decades. However, as sessile organisms, plants are subject to various factors, including biotic and abiotic stresses. The water availability is the major climatic factor affecting crop yields, its impact varies with the species, the timing of stress occurrence and its duration/intensity, resulting in a wide range of plant physiological responses. The objective of this work was to evaluate soybean cultivars with different tolerance to water deficit, analyzing ecophysiological and hyperspectral characteristics of plants submitted to water deficit, aiming to identify the magnitude of the effects of this stress on plants and the indicative characteristics of tolerance. Two experiments were conducted in greenhouse using the cultivars Embrapa 48 (EMB48 - tolerant to water deficit), BR 16 (BR16 - sensitive to water deficit) and CD202 IPRO (CD202 - moderately tolerant). The treatments were composed by the combination of soybean genotypes and water regimes. Several evaluations were carried out to determine the stress level (relative water content, leaf temperature, shoot dry mass, leaf area, among others), plant responses (hydraulic conductivity, chlorophyll relative content, energy dissipation mechanisms and gas exchange) and also the spectral behavior of the plants, through which different vegetation indexes were calculated. Water deficit affected the parameters evaluated in the different treatments and cultivars, confirming the effect of stress and the different strategies used by the cultivars. The cultivar considered water deficit tolerant showed maintenance of relative water content, optimizing the hydraulic conductivity of the xylem, allowing the maintenance of photosystem II efficiency and consequently higher photosynthetic rates, despite of reduced growth and development. The other two cultivars were very similar. The spectral reflectance curves shown differences between irrigated and non-irrigated plants in leaf pigment content (chlorophylls and carotenoids – perceptible in the visible range) and the water content in plants (indicated in the mid-infrared). Some vegetation indices were able to indicate stress in plants, especially the indexes related to leaf pigments. Some indices were effective in early detection of stress, i.e., before the physiological effects become more intense and visual wilting occurs, and could be used to select tolerant genotypes or help in water management. Thus, several tested parameters were able to indicate the effects of water stress on plants and the differential tolerance of cultivars.
