Identifying the limitations preventing the uptake of Geographical Information Systems in Secondary Geography classrooms throughout Scotland

While Geographical Information Systems/Science has been a growing phenomenon all over the world and more and more professions, University departments have had to keep up by offering courses in GIS to fill the market place. However, despite this growth and the benefits GIS brings to the education of young people, Schools are not responding quick enough. This study aimed to shadow work performed by Kerski (USA), Demirci (Turkey) and Johansson (Finland) to find out how GIS is being adopted in Scottish Secondary schools and to find out what is preventing effective implementation of the tool. Although cost and time were repeated issues, it became apparent that teachers are not getting adequate access to training and resources despite being enthusiastic about the educational benefits.
