The contamination with aflatoxins in Brazilian corn and feed for chickens and the risk evaluation

Aflatoxins (AFs) contamination were analyzed in Brazilian corn and feed for broiler chicken, as approximately 90% of chicken traded in Japan is imported from Brazil. AFs in feeding of such broilers can indicate the risk of possible secondary contamination due to ingestion of imported chicken meat. The monoclonal antibody, which reacted with AFBsub(1), AFBsub(2), AFGsub(1) and AFGsub(2) at the same level, was coupled with a gel. Using the antibody-coupled gel, we developed an immuneaffinity column linked HPLC (IAC-HPLC) method. In recovery test, when 2.5 ng/g of AFs were added to the feed for chicken; AFs recoveries were 83.5-99.4% with RSD of less than 1.9%. This IAC-HPLC method was applied to analyze total AFs in Brazilian corn (15 samples) and broiler chicken feed (16 samples). Four corn samples (27%) showed 6.22-63.09 ng/g level of total AFs, whereas 15 feed samples (94%) were contaminated with 0.36-4.38 ng/g of total AFs. However, the overall average +- SD was 1.25 +- 0.95 ng/g, indicating that general contamination was lower than the Japanese as well as Brazilian guideline for animal feeding. Taking to account that the quantity of shift to chicken of AFBsub(1) in feed was less than 1/1,000 of feed levels, the data suggests that chicken supplied with the investigated feed batch would be at safe condition.
