Measuring carbon and water fluxes in forest ecosystems

Here, we review methods for measuring carbon and water fluxes in forest ecosystems at component, whole-tree, and ecosystem scales. The suitability of each approach was found to vary among spatio-temporal scales of interest. Small-scale procedures often facilitate process-based understanding, while large scale methods are more appropriate in the evaluation of representative indices. Among procedures, sap flow measurement is appropriate for assessing fluxes across wide spatial (organ to stand) and temporal (hourly to annual) scales. The continued evolution of sap flow measurement techniques (e.g., for measuring sap flow in sieve tubes) will expand inter-scale understanding of carbon and water cycling in forest ecosystems.
