'Sagabiyori' is a new rice cultivar which was developed from the progeny of the cross between 'Saga27(thereafter Tenshinouta)' and 'Aichi 100(thereafter Aichinokaori SBL)' at Saga Prefectural Agricultural Research Center in 2008. The breeding objective was to combine superior eating quality, high yield and high quality of vidual grain. A promising line was selected from a F8 popuration and named 'Saga37' in 2003. In order to decide a recommended cultivar, the performance of this line was evaluated from 2002 to 2009. 'Sagabiyori' has been introduced as a recommended cultivar to Saga Prefecture since 2009, and it was officially registered to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan in 2011. The characteristics of this cultivar are as follows: 1. The heading date and maturity date of 'Sagabiyori' delayed 5 days and 3 days, respectively, from those of 'Hinohikari' (a standard cultivar in Kyushu area). 2. The culm lengh of 'Sagabiyori' is 6cm shorter than that of 'Hinohikari', thus its lodging resistance is superior to that of 'Hinohikari'. 3. The 1000-grain weight of 'Sagabiyori' is approximately 1g higher and its yielding ability is 5 to 10% higher than those of 'Hinohikari'. 4. Its field resistance to rice blast is weak. 5. The white core grain, milk-white grain and white belly grain of 'Sagabiyori' are less observed than 'Hinohikari', so the grain appearance of 'Sagabiyori' is significantly superior as compared to 'Hinohikari'. 6. The grain appearance and yielding ability of 'Sagabiyori' are certainly superior to those of 'Hinohikari', even if it matures under a high temperature condition. 7. Boiled rice was lustrous and sticky.
