'Saga 40', a new rice cultivar with low-amylose content in endosperm and purple grain

'Saga 40' is a new rice cultivar which was developed from the progeny of the cross between 'Kanto 198' and 'Sakei D387 (thereafter Saga 30)' at Saga Prefectural Agricultural Research Center in 2012. The breeding objective was to combine low-amylose content in endosperm and purple grain. 'Saga 40' was officially registered to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan in 2012. The characteristics of this cultivar are as follows. 1. The heading date and maturity date of 'Saga 40' delayed 2 days and 4 days, respectively, from those of 'Hinohikari' (a standard cultivar in Kyushu area). 2. The culm lengh of 'Saga 40' is similer and panicle length is longer those of 'Hinohikari'. The number of panicles are obviously fewer. Plant type of 'Saga 40' belongs to panicle weight type. The culm stiffness of 'Saga 40' is stronger, thus lodging resistance is slightly superior those of 'Hinohikari'. 3. The 1000-grain weight of 'Saga 40' is approximately 1.5g lower and its yielding ability is 10% lower than those of 'Hinohikari'. 4. 'Saga 40' seems to have the blast resistance gene Pik. Its field resistance to rice blast is obscure. 5. 'Saga 40' possesses dark purple(anthocyan pigment) grain pericarp. 6. The amylase content of 'Saga 40' is approximately 60% of that of 'Hinohikari', thus boiled rice is sticky and soft.
