A trial of production of genetic hybrids between ornamental stock and some Brassicaceae species using ovary and ovule culture

To create a new ornamental stock (Matthiola incana), artificial interspecific and intergeneric hybridization between female stocks and males of three Brassicaceae species - night-scented stock (M. longipetala), radish (Raphanus sativus), and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) - were performed. All the crosses successfully produced hybrids, although almost all the hybrids died at the stage of first leaf development. Only one plant (Mil-1), which resulted from a cross with night-scented stock, grew vigorously. Mil-1 was suggested to be amphidiploid based on its ploidy and RAPD analysis. The floret and leaf shape of Mil-1 were intermediate between those of the parents, but the leaf size was greater than either. Mil-1 is expected to be a useful bridging plant for stock breeding.
