Measuring ability of structurally modified capacitance-type moisture meters

Handheld capacitance type moisture meters are commonly used to determine the moisture content of wood. However, its measuring capability is limited due to being easily affected by the moisture content of the subject's measuring surface. In this paper we constructed multiple models of capacitance type moisture meters, each with different layout electrodes, in order to measure a larger range. The modified moisture meters were used to measure the moisture content of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), and the accuracy was compared with that of the base model. The moisture meter with parallel electrodes (P type) was the most accurate, with an overall RMSE of 2.8, followed by one with perpendicular electrodes (V type). Furthermore, we measured the moisture content of wood with variable moisture patterns, in an attempt to quantify the expansion in measuring range. The result indicates that the measured values were mainly affected by the moisture content between the electrodes, especially by that of the area close to the electrodes.
