Biodiversity and ecology of viruses in Capsicum species
2024
The advent of next-generation sequencing techniques has provided new sophisticated, increasingly affordable, and accurate techniques to characterize the diversity of plant viruses. Such virus biodiversity analyses identified a wide range of pepper-infecting viruses both in wild and agroecosystems, which has broadened current knowledge on the amplitude of the pepper virome. The ubiquitous nature of viruses in Capsicum species has boosted the interest in understanding their ecological role and the environmental factors that determine their prevalence and evolution. These studies have shown that pepper-virus interactions are far more diverse than initially expected, ranging from pathogenic to beneficial in some pepper relatives. This chapter aims at summarizing this knowledge and at providing future perspectives on the aspects that are still poorly understood.
