Filopatría reproductiva y flujo genético de Fregata magnificens | BREEDING Pl-IILOPATRY AND GENE FLOW IN Fregata magnificens.

En este trabajo se determinaron las dispersiones reproductiva y efectiva dc machos y hembras de Fregara magnificens mediante: (1) la estimación de la filopatría reproductiva anual por sexo a Isla Isabel, México con un estudio de captura-reavistamiento de 1998 a 2003, y (2) la estimación del flujo genético entre las principales colonias mexicanas: Isla Santa Margarita, B. C. S.; Isla Tunitas, Sinaloa; Isla Isabel, Nayarit en el Océano Pacífico e Isla Contoy, Quintana R00 en el Mar Caribe, con el uso de marcadores mitocondriales (ADNmt) y nucleares (ADN polimérfico amplificado al azar, RAPD). Se encontró que existe una mayor tendencia de las hembras a emigrar permanentemente de la colonia (Tasa de Retorno: TRh= 63%; Tasa de supervivencia aparente: øh= 0.71 ± 0.10), por lo que con el ADNmt se detectó un amplio flujo genético entre las colonias del Océano Pacífico reflejado en la ausencia de estructura genética en la población (ØST= 0.018, P=0.234). Sin embargo, la baja variabilidad encontrada con e1 ADNmt influyó en que la hipótesis nula de panmixia no fuera rechazada probablemente en asociación al poder estadístico. Por otro lado, la filopatría reproductiva sesgada hacia los machos (TRm=74%; øm= 0.85 ± 0.03) puede ser uno de los factores que influyen en el flujo genético restringido entre la Isla Santa Margarita y la Isla Isabel detectada con los RAPDS (Nm=1.37 migrantes por generación). A pesar de la alta capacidad de dispersión de F. magnificens existe una dispersión efectiva limitada entre las colonias del Océano Pacífico y la colonia del Mar Caribe (RAPDs: Nm≈5 migrantes por generación), por lo que la Isla Contoy debe manejarse de manera independiente a las colonias del Océano Pacífico. Aunque F. magnificens es una especie que ha sido reportada históricamente como abundante, la variabilidad genética extremadamente baja reportada en este estudio (diversidad haplotípica h < 0.32; diversidad nucleotídica π < 0.07%) es causa de atención, ya que podría ser reflejo de una erosión genética cuyas consecuencias en la salud de la especie deben ser evaluadas y consideradas en las acciones de conservación.

In this work the breeding and effective dispersal of males and females of Fregata magnificens was determined by (1) the quantification of annual breeding philopatry by sex in the breeding colony of Isla Isabel, Mexico, using a capture-recapture method from 1998 to 2003; and (2) the gene flow quantification between the main breeding Mexican colonies: Isla Santa Margarita, B. C. S.; Isla Tunitas, Sinaloa; Isla Isabel, Nayarit in the Pacific Ocean and Isla Contoy, Quintana Roo, in the Caribbean Sea, using mitocondrial (mtDNA) and nuclear (Random Amplified Polymorphism DNA, RAPDs) markers. There is a marked tendency of females to migrate permanently off the breeding colony (Return rate: RRf= 63%; Apparent survival rate: øf = 0.71 ± 0.10); therefore, it was detected a high gene flow with the mtDNA between the Pacific breeding colonies, showed by the absence of population genetic structure (ØST= 0.018, P=0.234). Nevertheless, the low genetic variability found with the mtDNA caused that the panmictic hypothesis was not rejected probably in association with the statistic power. On the other hand, the restricted gene flow detected by RAPDS (Nm = 1.37 migrants by generation) between Isla Santa Margarita and Isla Isabel could be influenced by the male biased breeding philopatry (RRm= 74%; Øm = 0.85 ± 0.03). In spite of the high dispersal capability of F. magnificens, there is an effective limited dispersal between the Pacific and the Caribbean breeding colonies (RAPDs: Nm≈ 5 migrants by generation). This way, the breeding colony of Isla Contoy should be managed independently to the breeding colonies of the Pacific Ocean. Although F. magnificens is a species that has been historically reported as abundant, the extremely low genetic variability reported in this study (haplotypic diversity h < 0.32; nucleotidic diversity π < 0.07%) is a cause of concern, because it could be an evidence of genetic erosion and the consequences in the species health must be assessed and considered in the conservation actions.
