Manganese exposure in the population resident in a mining district (México)-phase II : executive summary

The state of Hidalgo in the center of Mexico is one of the largest Manganese reservoirs in the world. 50 years of extraction has resulted in health and environmental impacts on 42 communities (127,400 inhabitants). The high exposure to manganese adversely impacts specific neurological functions; an increase of manganese concentrations in hair causes intelligence quotient (IQ) of children to decrease significantly. With an ecohealth approach it was possible to face unavoidable issues from perspectives of social, environmental and health sciences. The role played by state government is key to health conditions of the population, along with instituting controls on mining activities.
