Water is one of the basic life resources for all living things and is of vital importance. As a result of physical plans realized with economic concerns, rapid and unplanned urbanization, industrialization inadequate planning policies and practices, and climate change, natural resources began to be destroyed over time and water resources were also affected by this situation. The decrease in water resources has brought up the applications for its protection to ensure economic, ecological and social sustainability. Drinking water basins, which are of great importance for consuming water use, contain many elements. These elements are in a natural balance and are important in determining the sensitivity of each water basin. To ensure the protection-usage balance in drinking water basins, basin-specific values and sensitivities should be determined, and different evaluations should be made for each basin. However, it is seen that protection areas are determined according to the euclidean distance measurement system in the drinking water basins with different topography, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, soil, flora and polluting elements in Turkey. Drinking water protection areas in the world differ from Turkey in many features. In this study, the necessary elements in the determination of drinking water protection areas, the approaches of Turkey and selected countries to determine the protection areas are examined and the deficiencies of the system we apply and the necessary recommendations are emphasized. Using examples from other countries, the impact of ecosystem elements on the protection zones that need to be implemented is explained.
