Modelling the spatial-temporal distribution of Sardina pilchardus and Engraulis encrasicolus spawning habitat in the NW Mediterranean Sea

显示更多 [+] 显示较少 [-]The effects of environmental pressures on European sardine and anchovy have mostly been studied on adult populations, and a gap of knowledge remains for their early stages’ population dynamics. Here we investigated the main drivers of both species’ eggs and larvae distributions, using Generalized Additive Models and satellite environmental data from summer 2012 & 2013 and winter 2012-13, as explanatory variables. Mainly sea surface temperature, but also currents, surface height, and primary production were significantly correlated with both species’ early stages distributions. Although there is a lack of consensus in determining the thermal limits of both species, it is clear that temperature conditions both species’ distributions, and has positive effects when kept within optimal ranges. Model predictions were then conducted to study the larval and spawning habitat distribution of both species. Clear differences arose between developmental stages and between species, confirming the worsening of the European sardine habitat. Considering the further increase of surface temperature predicted in the years to come, the survival of the European sardine in the North-western Mediterranean Sea could be compromised
