Las evaluaciones de las poblaciones de peces en el mar Mediterráneo son, en cantidad y calidad, muy inferiores a las que se realizan en el vecino Atlántico norte (área CIEM). Esta diferencia se debe fundamentalmente a la escasez de bases de datos y a la falta de disponibilidad de metodologías adecuadas al entorno mediterráneo. Sin embargo, los modelos clásicos de evaluación están suficientemente validados como para abordar análisis de la dinámica de una población explotada. Además, el argumento de que el estado de una pesquería depende más de otros aspectos que los derivados de la explotación, demasiado extendido en el caso Mediterráneo, no debe poner freno a la utilización de esos modelos. Como caso práctico bajo estas premisas, nos propusimos estudiar la dinámica de la población del besugo Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1826) en el sector norte del mar de Alborán. La elección del besugo como especie objetivo tuvo dos motivaciones principales. En primera instancia, por ser la especie de pez más importante de la región surmediterránea en cuanto a capturas y, sin embargo, estar relativamente muy poco estudiada. En segundo lugar, al ser una especie intensamente explotada por dos flotas diferentes (arrastre y artesanales) ofrecía otro aspecto de interés: el del análisis de las interacciones entre ambas flotas y la respuesta de la población a cambios en el esquema de explotación de las mismas. Este último aspecto, de especial relevancia en las pesquerías mediterráneas, ha sido muy poco estudiado y los análisis llevados a cabo en esta memoria son los primeros de tal naturaleza que se desarrollan en la región surmediterránea. La organización del presente trabajo es muy dependiente de las necesidades de los análisis de dinámica de poblaciones que se realizan. Así, en los primeros capítulos se describen las pesquerías de besugo en el área, haciendo especial referencia a las capturas y sus distribuciones de frecuencias de tallas; a continuación, se estudian aquellos aspectos biológicos de los que se extraen los parámetros de entrada necesarios para la aplicación de los modelos y, por último, se presentan los análisis correspondientes. The quality and quantity of fish stock assessments carried out in the Mediterranean Sea is much poorer than those of the North Atlantic (ICES). This difference is mainly caused by the lack of information stored in databases, as well as the lack of appropriate methodologies adapted to the peculiarities of the Mediterranean fisheries. However, the classical assessment models are sufficiently validated to assess the dynamics of the fish populations exploited there. Moreover, the argument that the state of the Mediterranean fisheries depends on its own particularities rather than those derived from its exploitation -too extended in the Mediterranean case- should not be hindrance to the use of these models. As a case study of this premise, we decided to examine the population dynamics of the axillary seabream Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1826) in the northern sector of the Alborán Sea. The selection of P. acarne as a target species was mainly due to two reasons. First, this species is the most important in the South Mediterranean region in terms of landings. Second, since two different types of fleets exploit this species, it offers another interesting angle, related to the interaction of the fleets and the response of the exploited population to changes in the exploitation patterns. The latter aspect is relevant in the context of the Mediterranean fisheries, and has been insufficiently analysed; the present paper is the first to address this issue in the South Mediterranean region. This report is organised around the requirements of the population dynamics analysis that were used. Consequently, the first chapters describe the fisheries of P. acarne in the study area. Subsequently, details are given on the acquisition of the biological information from which the input parameters were derived for the application of the assessment models. Lastly, the resulting analysis is discussed. Many of the aspects studied differ insofar as the methods and even the materials used. This is why they are arranged into different sections within each chapter.
