Pyrolysis-compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis (PY-CSIA δ2h) of olive oil.

Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of plant derived fatty acids provides invaluable information about oil biogenetic and geographic origin which is very relevant for authenticity control and fraud detection [1]. This is because stable isotope composition of bioelements reflects local agricultural practices, the geo-climatic characteristics of the area of production, the water uptake and also the geographical position of production [2]. Up till now, these studies have been focused mainly to the estimation of carbon stable isotopes (¿13C) and to the date, only one study has focused in hydrogen/deuterium composition of specific fatty acids in olive oils [3]. Analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC) when combined with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) (Py-CSIA) (Fig. 1.) can be performed in a direct manner, using untreated samples, minimizing sample manipulation and avoiding pre-treatments (e.g. extraction, derivatization, purification). Here, ¿2H signature of the main components released after pyrolysis at 400 ºC (1 min) of olive oil are studied in samples from distinct geographical origin from The Mediterranean basin. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that records and evaluates hydrogen stable isotope composition directly from the pyrolysis products of olive oil using Py-CSIA (Py-GC-HT-IRMS). An example of the ¿2H Py-CSIA results for olive oil is shown in Fig. 2.
