In the context of recent commitments by the private sector and governments to achieve 'zero deforestation' related to agricultural supply chains, it remains unclear how progress towards this goal can be measured and how claims caqn be verified. Independently verified sustainability certification that ensures traceability might be a promising measure. In this study we analyze and compare different soy certification systems, focusing on their requirements for traceability. We argue that only segregation and identify preservation are chain-of-custody certification systems that allow for traceability because they require the physical separation of certified from non-certified soy along the supply chain. Among the analyzed sample of 15 certification systems, only three require at least segregation and can therefore be used to support claims with respect to 'deforestation-free' supply chain.
