To study the inhibition effect of water-repellent sand on the expansion rate of expansive soil, this study takes the strongly expansive soil of weathered slopes as an example and adds octadecylamine into sand as water repellent agents to improve the expansive soil. The expansion rate tests are carried out on the ring-knife samples with 27 times of compaction, and the expansion and contraction characteristics of modified expansive soil under the optimal water content are revealed. The results indicate that the natural soil changes from hydrophilic to water-repellent upon the addition of water-repellent sand into expansive soil, and the water repellency is significantly enhanced. The optimal water content of the five modified expansive soils decreases with the increase in water repellency, and the expansion rate is reduced from 35% to 9%,which means the expansion characteristics are greatly inhibited. It is feasible to restrain the expansion and seepage of strongly expansive soil by adding water-repellent sand (octadecylamine content of 0.04%).
