Highlights • The use of prior experience in guiding prey escape decisions has been overlooked. • We repeatedly measured flight initiation distance of incubating common eiders. • Individuals differed in their response to repeated human approaches. • Birds in poor condition, laying early or with large clutches became more sensitized. • Females were less prone to being sensitized under high adult predation risk.
