In the silty Lithuanian lakes, about 1.5 bill. m³ sapropel are accumulated. Sapropel is a valuable organic, limy matter which can be used for soil fertilization and improving. Dealing with the already silked lakes, most often mechanical removal of lake sapropel is applied. Sapropel was extracted with a dragger from Lake Ilgutis, was dried up in sediment bowls up to 80-85% humidity and inserted into soil. Summarised results of a long term experiment showed that by the end of the second (after 12 years) and third (after 18 years) rotations the effect of sapropel on soil chemical properties was positive. Calcereous sapropel reduced soil acidity and increased the content of exchangeable bases (Ca + Mg). Under the influence of sapropel, the content of organic carbon and total nitrogen increased as well. The higher rates (150, 120 t ha-¹) of dry sapropel after 18 years of application increased the productivity of crops. The highest rate of sapropel (200 t ha-¹) was almost of the same effectiveness as of manure applied in every rotation.
