Evaluation of the concentration of trihalomethanes compounds in drinking water distributed in David City, Panamá, and its risks to human health | Evaluación de la concentración de compuestos trihalometanos en el agua potable distribuida en la Ciudad David, Panamá y sus riesgos a la salud humana

英语. The disinfection of water for human consumption gives rise to the formation of by-products highly harmful to health, called Trihalomethanes (THMs). The objective of this study is to determine the presence and concentration of trihalomethanes compounds in the drinking water supplied by the Algarrobos water treatment plant, in the City of David, Province of Chiriquí, Panama, and to evaluate whether these concentrations represent a risk to the human health of consumers of this vital liquid. The determination of trihalomethanes in the water samples was carried out with a gas chromatograph equipped with a DB-624 capillary column (30m x 0.32mm x 1.8µm) coupled to a microelectron capture detector (µ-ECD) high temperature, Ni53. Water samples were collected at 9 strategic points of the distribution network of the Los Algarrobos plant on July 18, 2017, and analyzed in duplicate using the solid phase microextraction technique (HS-SPME) using silica fiber from 1cm long covered with Polydimenthylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) 65μm thick. The concentration range of total trihalomethanes was between 0.01 and 4.15µg/L, with chloroform being the predominant compound with 52.1%, bromodichloromethane with 18.6%, and chlorodibromomethane with 16.4%. and finally, bromoform with 12.9%. The average concentration of trihalomethanes in surface waters was 2.35µg/L. The values of trihalomethanes found are lower than the maximum allowable concentration (80µg/L) established by the EPA for these compounds, so they do not represent a risk with adverse health effects.

El objetivo de este estudio es determinar la presencia y concentración de compuestos trihalometanos en el agua de consumo suministrada por la planta potabilizadora de Algarrobos, en la Ciudad de David, Provincia de Chiriquí, Panamá, y evaluar si dichas concentraciones representan un riesgo a la salud humana de los consumidores de este vital líquido. La determinación de los trihalometanos en las muestras de agua se realizó con un cromatógrafo de gas equipado con una columna capilar DB-624 (30m x 0.32mm x 1.8µm) acoplada a un detector de microcaptura de electrones (µ-ECD) de alta temperatura, Ni53. Se recolectaron muestras de agua en nueve puntos estratégicos de la red de distribución de la planta de Los Algarrobos, el 18 de julio de 2017 y analizadas por duplicado empleando la técnica de microextracción en fase sólida (HS-SPME) usando la fibra de sílica de 1cm de longitud cubierta con Polidimentilsiloxano/divinilbenceno (PDMS/DVB) de 65μm de espesor. El rango de concentración de trihalometanos totales se situó entre 0.01 y 4.15µg/L, siendo el cloroformo el compuesto predominante con 52.1%, bromodiclorometano con 18.6%, el clorodibromometano en 16.4% y finalmente el bromoformo con 12.9%. La concentración media de trihalometanos en aguas de origen superficial fue de 2.35 µg/L. Los valores de trihalometanos encontrados son inferiores a la concentración máxima admisible (80µg/L) establecida por la EPA para estos compuestos por lo que no representan un riesgo con efectos adversos para la salud.
