The epidemiology of Leptospira interrogans infection in animals, especially in cattle in the U.K. is outlined, with emphasis on the differentiation between maintenance host and accidental host infection. The clinical and economic significance of serovar hardjo infection in cattle in the U.K. are discussed in the light of current techniques for diagnosis. It is concluded that hardjo infection in the U.K. causes a direct annual financial loss of between £7.3 million and £36.3 million to the cattle industry. Vaccination is assessed as the only practical method of control, and although direct financial loss caused by hardjo infection does not conclusively show that national vaccination is justified, it is probably necessary if public health significance and loss of production potential are considered. It is also concluded that vaccination of all cattle could become the basis of a national eradication programme for hardjo infection.
