The role of large-scale irrigation as an agricultural strategy to improve productivity in developing countries is gaining acceptance. This is particularly the case in semi-arid tropical regions of the world where mainly due to scarcity and infrequency of rainfall there is very little growth potential in traditional agriculture and similarly difficult to maximize animal production. This paper examines the various prospects for livestock integration with irrigated cropping systems in semi-arid areas,- and this is analysed for the case of the Sudan Gezira Scheme. Within the limits presented by the existing conditions in the Scheme as regards the organizational structure, environmental and other internal and external constraints in the Gezira, the paper, while appreciating the risks involved in total dependence on cotton as the major source of income, cautions against the introduction of livestock into the Scheme simply on economic or social grounds. Rather efforts should first be made to ensure that productivity is improved within the present system in which cotton remains the vital component of the Sudanese economy.
