CONDICIONES HIDROGRÁFICAS (2007-2009) AL SUR DE ISLA MARGARITA Y PENÍNSULA DE ARAYA COMO INDICIO DE DISMINUCIÓN DE LA FERTILIDAD REGIONAL Y POSIBLE AFECTACIÓN DEL RECURSO SARDINERO VENEZOLANO

RESUMEN: Durante 18 meses (octubre/2007 a marzo/2009) se estudiaron variables ecológicas en estaciones al sur de isla Margarita (Coche, Cubagua y Macanao) y la Península de Araya (Guaca, Chacopata y Araya). Se colectaron 216 muestras de agua (1 y 25 m profundidad) para determinar temperatura, salinidad, oxígeno disuelto, nutrientes (nitrito, nitrato, amonio y fosfato) y biomasa del fitoplancton (Clorofila a). Se calcularon promedios totales y estacionales, considerando periodos de surgencia (enero-mayo) y de relajación (junio-diciembre). La temperatura (ºC) promedio en superficie (26,5) y 25 m (24,9) fue más alta que en años precedentes. Durante la surgencia el promedio de temperatura y salinidad no indican afloramiento de agua subtropical. En las estaciones no se verificó diferencia en la concentración (μmol l-1) de nitrato, amonio y fosfato en superficie y 25 m, pero en ésta la concentración de nitrito es hasta 3 veces el valor en superficie. En la surgencia y la relajación se determinaron diferencias éstadísticamente significativas en la concentración de nitrito y amonio, pero no en el fosfato y nitrato. Durante la surgencia la Cl. a (mg/m³) es mayor (1,82) que en la relajación (0,91), pero en años previos fue hasta 5 veces más alta. La concentración de los nutrientes (excepto el nitrato) y en especial de la Cl. a fueron Sardinella aurita marcadamente menores en comparación con el 2004 (1,72 vs. 4,77 mg/m³) año cuando ocurrieron las capturas de sardina históricamente más cuantiosas. La disminución de la fertilidad acuática regional puede relacionarse con la dramática crisis de la pesca de sardina que persiste luego de 6 años de iniciada. ABSTRACT: With the purpose of studying ecological variables, 216 water samples were collected at stations in Coche, Cubagua, and Macanao, to the south of Margarita Island; and in Guaca, Chacopata, and Araya, on the Araya Peninsula, from October 2007 to March 2009. The samples were collected at 1 and 25 m depths to determine temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, and phosphate), and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a). Total and seasonal averages were calculated for periods of upwelling (January – May) and relaxation (June – December). Mean temperatures at surface (26.5 ºC) and 25 m (24.9 ºC) were higher than those of previous years. Average temperature and salinity are no indication of subtropical water surge during upwelling. Although no difference was found between the respective concentrations (μmol l-1) of nitrate, ammonia, and phosphate at surface and those at 25 m, the nitrite concentration was 3 times higher at the latter depth than at the surface. Statistically significant differences were found in both nitrite and ammonia concentrations during upwelling and relaxation, but not in those of phosphate and nitrate. Chlorophyll a (mg/m³) was higher at upwelling (1.82) than at relaxation (0.91) although it had reached values up to 5 times higher in previous years. Also, nutrient concentrations, excepting that of nitrates, were exceptionally lower than those of 2004, especially chlorophyll a (1.72 versus 4.77) when sardine catches were historically larger, a dwindling phenomenon that is no doubt related to the region’s diminished aquatic fertility, which heralded diminishing stocks of Sardinella aurita, an ongoing crisis 6 years after its onset.
