英语. This article analyzes the situation of the peasants producing coffee of Los Altos de Chiapas, who in different ways have been trapped in the dynamics of the global market. The analysis is focused on the dilemma that these have faced in the last 30 years of neoliberal policies, producing basic foods (corn and beans) for self-consumption or producing coffee to generate monetary income. This in a context where the State does not protect the peasants, despite the risks involved in the “free” market, leading to coffee expansion. The study privileges the historical-structural approach and is based on field work carried out in the municipalities of Pantelhó, Chenalhó, San Juan Cancuc and Tenejapa, during 2014-2016.

Este artículo analiza la situación de los campesinos productores de café de Los Altos de Chiapas, quienes en distintas formas han quedado atrapados en la dinámica del mercado global. El análisis está centrado en el dilema que éstos han enfrentado en los últimos 30 años de políticas neoliberales, producir alimentos básicos (maíz y frijol) para el autoconsumo o producir café para generar ingresos monetarios. Esto en un contexto donde el Estado no protege a los campesinos, pese a los riesgos que entraña el “libre” mercado, propiciando la expansión cafetalera. El estudio privilegia el enfoque histórico-estructural y se basa en trabajo de campo realizado en los municipios de Pantelhó, Chenalhó, San Juan Cancuc y Tenejapa, durante 2014-2016.
