Photosynthetic heat tolerance of Rubiaceae species in a warming world | Termotolerância fotossintética de espécies de Rubiaceae em um mundo em aquecimento

O aumento das temperaturas médias globais e a incidência mais frequente de eventos climáticos extremos têm implicações significativas tanto para os ecossistemas naturais quanto para as atividades agrícolas. O estresse térmico pode levar à desnaturação de proteínas, interrompendo a produção e regeneração de proteínas, resultando em danos ao aparato fotossintético afetando a aptidão das plantas. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as respostas fotossintéticas das plantas ao estresse térmico, com foco especial na família Rubiaceae e em Coffea spp.. As hipóteses testadas ao longo desse tese incluem: (1) a termotolerância está intrinsecamente relacionada ao microclima de crescimento das espécies na família Rubiaceae; (2) a pré-aclimatização em altas temperaturas garante melhor desempenho fotossintético e recuperação da planta após estresse térmico; e (3) a sazonalidade climática modula as respostas fotossintéticas de acordo com a variação na disponibilidade hídrica para as plantas. Os resultados revelaram que as plantas de café possuem um alto nível de tolerância fotossintética ao calor independentemente da aclimatização à luz solar intensa. A plasticidade morfológica das folhas influencia a tolerância ao calor, com folhas maiores e menor fração da área foliar ocupada por poros estomáticos correlacionadas a uma maior tolerância ao calor. C. canephora var. Conilon apresentou uma tolerância ao calor maior que as duas variedades de C. arabica. As respostas fotossintéticas em variedades C. arabica foram influenciadas pela sazonalidade climática, com uma maior tolerância ao calor observada na estação seca. Os cafeeiros mostraram maior tolerância ao calor com o aumento da temperatura foliar e a diminuição do teor de água nas folhas. As folhas cotiledonares exibiram maior tolerância ao calor do que as folhas verdadeiras em plantas de C. arabica cv. Catuaí Amarelo em estágio inicial de desenvolvimento. Além disso, a pré aclimatação em altas temperaturas não letais garante melhor resposta fotossintética e recuperação nas mudas de cafeeiro. Para as espécies nativas de Rubiaceae, observou-se uma relação entre o potencial hídrico foliar e a tolerância ao calor fotossintético, com limiares de tolerância mais altos associados a um potencial hídrico foliar mais baixo. Também foram encontradas diferenças significativas na tolerância ao calor entre diferentes formas de vida vegetal, com árvores apresentando maior tolerância térmica. Esses resultados destacam a importância da plasticidade e adaptação das plantas às mudanças climáticas e ressaltam a necessidade de considerar a diversidade de plantas e características funcionais na gestão dos ecossistemas tropicais.

The increase in global average temperatures and the more frequent incidence of extreme weather events have significant implications for both natural ecosystems and agricultural activities. Thermal stress can lead to protein denaturation, disrupting protein production and regeneration, resulting in damage to the photosynthetic apparatus and affecting plant fitness. This study aimed to analyze the photosynthetic responses of plants to heat stress, with focus on the Rubiaceae family and Coffea spp.. The hypotheses tested throughout this thesis include: (1) thermotolerance is intrinsically related to the growth microclimate of species within the Rubiaceae family; (2) pre-acclimation to high temperatures ensures better photosynthetic performance and plant recovery after thermal stress; and (3) climatic seasonality modulates photosynthetic responses according to the variation in water availability for plants. The results revealed that coffee plants possess a high level of photosynthetic heat tolerance regardless of shading conditions. The morphological plasticity of leaves influences heat tolerance, with larger leaves and a smaller fraction of the leaf area occupied by stomatal pores being correlated with greater heat tolerance. C. canephora var. Conilon exhibited greater heat tolerance than the two varieties of C. arabica. Photosynthetic responses in C. arabica varieties were influenced by climatic seasonality, with greater heat tolerance observed during the dry season. Coffee plants showed greater heat tolerance with increasing leaf temperature and decreasing leaf water content. At an early developmental stage, cotyledonary leaves of coffee seedlings exhibited greater heat tolerance than true leaves in C. arabica cv. Catuaí Amarelo. Besides that, step-acclimation in high non-lethal temperature ensures better photosynthetic response and recovery in coffee seedlings. For native Rubiaceae species, a relationship was observed between leaf water potential and photosynthetic heat tolerance, with higher tolerance thresholds associated with lower leaf water potential. Significant differences in heat tolerance were also found between different plant life forms, with trees showing greater thermal tolerance. These results highlight the importance of plant plasticity and adaptation to climate change and underscore the need to consider plant diversity and functional characteristics in the management of tropical ecosystems.
