Los animales de compañía están altamente expuestos a los efectos tóxicos del humo del tabaco, incluso más que los humanos, debido a su proximidad al suelo, donde se acumulan partículas nocivas. La exposición prolongada al humo del tabaco incrementa significativamente el riesgo de patologías graves en los animales, como cáncer de vejiga, bronquitis crónica y asma. Pets are highly exposed to the toxic effects of tobacco smoke, even more so than humans, due to their proximity to the ground, where harmful particles accumulate. Prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke significantly increases the risk of serious pathologies in animals, such as bladder cancer, chronic bronchitis and asthma. Studies in breeds such as Scottish Terriers show an increased incidence of cancer in dogs exposed to smoke, while other animals develop symptoms such as persistent coughing, shortness of breath and lung tissue damage due to inflammatory responses in the respiratory system. The environmental impact is also considerable. Cigarette filters, composed of non-biodegradable acetate, along with cellophane and packaging, generate pollution that affects the health of humans, animals and the environment for decades. The lack of information among guardians and veterinarians hinders early diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, which highlights the importance of preventing the exposure of pets to tobacco smoke to protect their well-being and health.
