Exogenous spraying of Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate (DIECA) increased the female to male ratio and seed production of buffalo grass

Buffalograss has been extensively used in recent years as a low-maintenance lawn grass. The artificial manipulation of sex differentiation in buffalograss to enhance seed production is important for both cultivation and practical applications. In this study, we applied a specific concentration of synthetic auxin (Naphthaleneacetic acid, NAA) and inhibitors of jasmonic acid synthesis (Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate, DIECA) solution on buffalograss under field conditions. The majority of treatments significantly improved the number of female fertile tillers, female florets, the female-to-male ratio, and ultimately, seed yield (p < 0.05). Among all treatments, 100 mg/L DIECA + 100 mg/L NAA, and 100 mg/L DIECA + 150 mg/L NAA, demonstrated the most effective results. Under these two treatments, the number of female fertile tillers increased by 161% and 145% respectively, the number of female florets increased by 8.56% and 7.82% respectively, the female-to-male ratio increased by 130% and 118% respectively, the potential seed yield increased by 136% and 121% respectively, and the actual seed yield increased by 69% and 77% respectively.
