Potential of carrageenan and chitosan as biostimulants in the in vitro multiplication of abaca (Musa textilis Nee)

Chitosan (CHT) and irradiated carrageenan (iCAR) were used as culture media amendments to stimulate growth of the in vitro abaca shoot tip cultures. Low viscosity and low molecular weight CHT and iCAR were supplemented to MS medium at 20, 40, 80, 100 and 160 mg/L. Shoot emergence was significantly higher in shoots grown in MS medium with higher iCAR doses. Plant height, number of opened leaves, and root length were enhanced in iCAR-treated cultures. Potted plantlets showed taller plants in treatments sprayed with CHT and iCAR but the number of leaves formed was unaffected. Growth increment of potted plantlets was higher in 160mg/L iCAR while percent increase in height due to the application of the growth stimulants was favored in plantlets treated with 100 mg/L iCAR followed by 160 mg/L chitosan, which means more vigorous plantlets at the hardening phase. The positive effects of CHT and iCAR in this study showed good sources of biostimulants in the in vitro culture of abaca. It is a sustainable method for micropropagation that will lessen cost of production as these are locally available and abundant in the Philippines. It will also reduce environmental pressures through the use or organic sources of growth promoters and good substitute for inorganic chemicals.
