Crop diversification on sloping rice-based areas in Aglipay, Quirino, Philippines

Crop diversification maximizes the use of land and optimizes farm productivity and income. It improves the farming system, protect against soil erosion and degradation, and gives an additional income to farmers. This project was implemented by Department of Agriculture Quirino Experiment Station with the collaborating agency Department of Agricultural Regional Field Office No. 02 and the Municipality of Aglipay [Philippines]. The duration of the project was from January 2021 to December 2022. NSIC RC 27 (Upland Rice Variety) was used as the experiment crop and with an average yield of 2,563.50 kg/ha. Contour farming and planting of hedgerows (banana, pineapple, citrus and pigeon pea) can reduce soil erosion by 0.892 cu m/ha/year from 1.715 cu m/ha/year to 0.823 cu m/ha/year. Farmers utilized agro-waste into mushroom production as an additional income. The profitability analysis was done to determine the return on investment of the project. It revealed that an additional income of 27,457.00 pesos generated on the intervention of the project as compared to the Farmers Practice or without intervention planted solely with upland rice with 5,986.42 annual income/ha with the use of Palawan variety. Recorded net income of banana production was 3,575.00 pesos, 9,830.00 pesos for the production of pineapple and 2,905.00 pesos for the mushroom production. The Return on Investment were 76% for pineapple 373% for banana and 259% mushroom for additional income generating product. These findings would help the community to sustain upland farming and as basis in crafting Resolution/Ordinance/Agreement of Support on the adoption of the project.
