Indigenous poultry breeds are of great importance as part of the strategy for preserving the overall biodiversity in the Republic of Serbia. Both for the preser vation of autochthonous genotypes, as well as for the production of meat and eggs of special value. The aim of this study was to examine the production characteristics and quality of eggs of the indigenous breed Sombor crested chicken (blue, white and red strain) in the traditional free range system. The research was conducted in a period of eight weeks in the middle of the production cycle. It can be concluded that all three strains of Sombor crested chicken achieved poorer production results compared to combined pure breeds. The best production of eggs was shown by the white strain (46.07%) with the lowest food consumption per laid egg (0.49 kg), while the highest eggs weight was found in the blue type (62.33 g). The darkest color of the yolk was observed in the red and the lightest in the blue strain. In general, it can be concluded that Sombor crested chicken is not suitable for conventional eggs production, but it is recommended for keeping by small bree ders, in order to contribute to their survival.
