Relationship between ovary locule formation and content of related metabolites of stem apices during floral bud differentiation stages in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seedling

To fully understand function of related metabolites of ovary locule formation in tomato, two varieties, ovary multi-locule (MLK1) and few-locule (FL1), were used. Using cross and reciprocal cross, various groups were constructed to seek the relationship between related metabolites and ovary locule formation of parents and progeny during floral bud differentiation stages for modifying tomato breeding theory. The results show that the contents of fructose, glucose, sucrose, starch, soluble protein and DNA content in multi-locule tomato were higher than that of in few-locule tomato during floral bud differentiation stages; RNA content in few-locule tomato was higher than that of in multi-locule tomato; the contents of fructose, glucose, soluble protein, DNA and RNA content in F<sub>1</sub> and RF<sub>1</sub> were between that of multi-locule tomato and that of few-locule tomato. These results were consistent with locule number. The correlation analysis showed that the contents of glucose, sucrose, starch, soluble protein during the sepal petal formation stage were significantly correlated with ovary locule number. The ovary locule number was significantly positively correlated with glucose, sucrose, starch, soluble protein content, and significantly negatively correlated with RNA content. The contents of fructose and DNA were correlated with ovary locule number. The results above suggested that ovary locule formation in tomato might be related to interaction among the metabolites. And the formation stages of sepal and petal were an important stage which adjust locule number.
