Efficacy of CIDR-based Protocols for Treatment of Prolonged Postpartum Anoestrus in Jersey Crossbred Cattle on Smallholder Farms

This study assessed the efficacy of three Controlled Intra-vaginal Drug Releasing device (CIDR) based treatment methods to induce estrus and ovulation in anoestrus Jersey crossbred cows. Anoestrus (n = 113) cows were examined during a fertility campaign conducted in Paro district. Among these cows, 69 (61%) were diagnosed as true anoestrus while 32 (17.3%) were found pregnant. Among 53 (15.09%) cows reported to be repeat breeding, 24 (45.28%) and 23 (43.39%) were due to non-specific repeat breeding and cystic ovarian condition respectively. All the cows in true anoestrus (n = 69) were subjected to three hormonal treatments, namely, CIDR7(n = 46), CIDR7 + PGF2α (n = 10), and GnRH + CIDR7 + PGF2α (n = 10). The estrus response rate was 76%, 90%, and 80%; and pregnancy rate was 27.78%, 33.33%, and 25.0% in CIDR7, CIDR7 + PGF2α, and GnRH + CIDR7 + PGF2α respectively. Estrus response rate and pregnancy rates appeared higher with CIDR7 + PGF2α, however there was no significant difference between the treatments (p gt; .05). While all the three treatments used in this study were equally effective, CIDR insertion could be suggested as it is cost effective.
