Soil water-logging effects on yield of some important agricultural crops in Cuba | Efecto del exceso de humedad del suelo sobre el rendimiento en algunos cultivos de importancia agrícola en Cuba

英语. Rainfall excess during the rainy season is the main cause of soil waterlogging in Cuba. In areas with poor soil drainage, surface drainage is the best solution for cropping during the rainy season, but for an adequate drainage system design, it is necessary to know the required time to evacuate the excess rainfall before the crop is affected by waterlogging in soils. Data from different experiments carry out in Cuba, were if was measured the effects of the numbers of days with excessive soil moisture on yield in different crops; where adjusted to a piecewise linear model similar to one developed for Gupta et al (1992) in India. Adjusting the model, it was fnd that there is not yield declined for a few initial days of submergence, beyond this period, if submergence continue, there would be linear decline in yield. The unknown parameters in the model are optimum yield, threshold time and the slope which represent the percent yield reduction per day of additional submergence beyond the threshold. The model worked well in the crops selected (sugar cane, black bean, soya bean, potatoes, star grass and king grass); in some of them like black bean and potatoes, the threshold value was cero or very closed; the highest percent values of yields reduction in relation with the number of submergence days were 34,3, 23,2 and 16,3 for potatoes, black bean and soya bean respectively and lowest were star grass, sugar cane and king grass. The prosed model permit to calculate the drainage requirements and the economic evaluation of crop submergence and the economic value of the investment to do in drainage; it is recommended to continues the research and to extend the model to others important crops in the country like corn, sorghum, sunflowers and others that are planted in soils susceptible to submergence.

En Cuba, la principal causa de los problemas de drenaje agrícola lo constituyen las lluvias que provocan exceso de humedad de los suelos en áreas que serían más productivas con un adecuado sistema de drenaje superfcial; para el diseño de estos sistemas es necesario conocer el tiempo requerido para evacuar las lluvias en exceso, este último parámetro fuertemente dependiente de la afectación que puede sufrir el cultivo por el exceso de humedad. A partir del análisis de los datos tomados de experimentos realizados en Cuba sobre la resistencia de diferentes cultivos al exceso de humedad en el suelo fueron ajustando los mismos a un modelo no lineal de dos partes, a partir del mismo se muestra que existe un umbral, variable según el cultivo, en el que no hay efecto del exceso de humedad sobre el rendimiento, luego si el exceso de humedad continua hay un decline lineal del rendimiento; los parámetros a calcular en el modelo son el rendimiento óptimo (sin exceso de humedad en el suelos), el número de días umbral y la pendiente que representa el porcentaje de reducción del rendimiento por día adicional de exceso de humedad. El modelo parece funcionar bien en los cultivos ensayados (caña de azúcar, frijol negro, soya, papa, pasto estrella y king grass), y en algunos de ellos como el frijol y la papa el valor umbral fue cero o muy cercano; los mayores valores de reducción porcentual del rendimiento con relación a los días de inundación fueron de 34,3, 23,2 y 16,3 para la papa, frijol negro y soya respectivamente, y los menores entre 3 y 6 para el pasto estrella, la caña de azúcar y el king grass. El modelo propuesto permite el cálculo de las necesidades de drenaje y la evaluación económica del efecto del mismo y la inversión a realizar, por lo que se recomienda su ampliación a otros cultivos, como el maíz, sorgo, girasol y otros posibles de producir en suelos con problemas de drenaje
