For the full use of the biological nitrogen fixation(BNF) benefits in agriculture, it is necessary to calculate thequantity of N fixed by plant-microorganism systems underdifferent field conditions. Canavalia ensiformis is a very usefullegume as a green manure. Diverse methodologies exist toquantify and/or evaluate BNF based mainly on the incrementof dry matter production, differences in the total yield of N,nodulation, xylem solutes, enzymatic activity (acetylenereduction) and the use of 15N. The present work was carriedout mainly to quantify the biological nitrogen fixation ofCanavalia ensiformis by means of the total difference of Nmethod in the soil-plant system. The experiment was developedin the department of Agricultural Services of INCA, on alixiviated Red Ferralitic soil with N availability of 26.8 kg.ha-1.Canavalia was sowed in May, 2006 at the beginning of therainy season using corn as a reference crop; a random blockdesign was used with four replications. The growth in bothspecies was good, despite the low initial N content in the soil,observing statistically significant differences in Nconcentration. Besides, nitrogen content is much higher incanavalia, which is in correspondence with nitrogenconcentrations in each organ. On the other hand, it wasobserved that the biological nitrogen fixation of canavalia wasof the order of 62.84 %, equivalent to 81.77 kg N.ha-1.

Para el pleno aprovechamiento de los beneficiosde la fijación biológica del nitrógeno en la agricultura, es preci-so calcular la cantidad de N que se fija por los sistemas planta-microorganismo en diferentes condiciones de campo. LaCanavalia ensiformis es una leguminosa de gran uso comoabono verde. Existen diversas metodologías para cuantificary/o evaluar FBN basados principalmente en el incremento dela producción de materia seca, diferencias en el rendimiento deN total, nodulación, solutos en el xilema, actividad enzimática(reducción del acetileno) y utilización del 15N.  El presente tra-bajo se realizó teniendo como objetivo principal cuantificar lafijación biológica del nitrógeno de la Canavalia ensiformispor el método de la diferencia de N total del sistema suelo-planta. El experimento se desarrolló en el departamento de Ser-vicios Agrícolas del INCA, sobre un suelo Ferralítico Rojolixiviado con una disponibilidad para los cultivos de 26.8 kgN.ha-1. La canavalia se sembró en mayo del 2006, al inicio de laépoca de lluvias y como cultivo de referencia se empleó elmaíz; el diseño experimental fue de bloques al azar con cuatroréplicas. A pesar del bajo contenido inicial de nitrógeno en elsuelo, el crecimiento en ambas especies fue bueno, observán-dose diferencias estadísticamente significativas en cuanto a laconcentración de N. Además, se pudo apreciar que el conteni-do de nitrógeno fue más alto en la canavalia, lo cual estuvo encorrespondencia con las concentraciones de nitrógeno en cadaórgano. Por otra parte, se observó que la fijación biológica denitrógeno de la canavalia fue del orden del 62.84 %, equiva-lente a 81.77 kg N.ha-1.
