Productive and environmental response of Gliricidia sepium in live fences in livestock ecosystems of Jimaguayú | Respuesta productiva y ambiental de Gliricidia sepium en cercas vivas en ecosistemas ganaderos de Jimaguayú

英语. The integration of trees into livestock systems is key to improving productivity and sustainability in tropical regions with degraded soils. This study evaluated the productive and environmental responses of Gliricidia sepium in live fences in Jimaguayú, Camagüey, Cuba. Foliage yield was measured at 90 and 180 days post-cutting, along with monthly litter deposition and soil macrofauna abundance under trees and in treeless pastures. Results showed that dry matter yield increased significantly (*p* < 0.001) at 180 days (1.25 kg/tree/cutting) compared to 90 days (0.54 kg/tree/cutting). Litter deposition reached 335 kg/ha/month (4.02 t/ha/year), surpassing previous studies with other species. Furthermore, soil macrofauna (annelids and beetles) were more abundant under trees (499 individuals/m²) than in treeless grasslands (330 individuals/m²). It was concluded that G. sepium improves forage productivity, enriches the soil with leaf litter, and promotes soil biodiversity, making it a sustainable alternative for livestock systems in tropical conditions.

Este estudio evaluó la respuesta productiva y ambiental de Gliricidia sepium en cercas vivas en Jimaguayú, Camagüey, Cuba. Se midió el rendimiento de follaje a los 90 y 180 días post-corte, la deposición de hojarasca mensual y la abundancia de macrofauna edáfica bajo árboles y en pastizales sin árboles. Los resultados mostraron que el rendimiento de materia seca aumentó significativamente (*p* < 0,001) a los 180 días (1,25 kg/árbol/corte) frente a los 90 días (0,54 kg/árbol/corte). La deposición de hojarasca alcanzó 335 kg/ha/mes (4,02 t/ha/año), superando estudios previos con otras especies. Además, la macrofauna edáfica (anélidos y coleópteros) fue más abundante bajo los árboles (499 ind/m²) que en pastizales sin árboles (330 ind/m²). Se concluyó que G. sepium mejora la productividad forrajera, enriquece el suelo mediante hojarasca y favorece la biodiversidad edáfica, por lo que constituye una alternativa sostenible para sistemas ganaderos en condiciones tropicales.
