In this study, the enzymatic capacity of 164 fungal strains isolated from three lakes (water, biofilm, sediments) in the municipality of Chișinău was evaluated, highlighting the remarkable biotechnological potential of these aquatic environments. The results demonstrate the ability of aquatic fungi to produce enzymes such as amylase, catalase, cellulase, and lipase. Of the 164 fungal strains tested, 12.2% exhibited moderate enzymatic activity for the four studied enzymes. Fungal representatives of the genera Aspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, Talaromyces, Trichoderma, Fusarium, Mucor, and Rhizopus were tested; however, regardless of the site of isolation, the most enzymatically active strains were those belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Talaromyces, and Trichoderma. In addition, these findings suggest that aquatic fungi could serve as a valuable source of industrially relevant enzymes for various biotechnological applications.
