Observations on the transmission of Theileria mutans in South Africa
1981
De Vos, A.J. | Roos, J.A.
Theileria mutans, 4 isolates obtained from geographically distant parts of South Africa by subinoculation of infected blood were readily transmitted to cattle by Amblyomma hebraeum, all attempts to transmit these isolates with Rhipicephalus appendiculatus were unsuccessful

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that causes toxoplasmosis in humans and animals. It belongs to the phylum Apicomplexa, subclass Coccidiasina and family Sarcocystidae. The Felidae family is thedefinitive host for this disease where the parasites undergo a sexual cycle of replication (oocysts). In this study, cat faeces were collected from private clinics around Johore Bahru, Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 61 samples were tested using microscopy to detect for presence of T. gondii oocyst via two methods; namelythe Modified Kato-Katz with Kinyoun staining and Sheather’s sugar floatation methods. The results showed that 40.98% of the faecal samples tested were positive for T. gondii oocysts. These two methodswere successfully used in diagnosing toxoplasmosis in cats in this study. Morphological approaches for Toxoplasma oocysts identification have been neglected in recent years, due to the upsurge of moreprecise technologies. This study suggests that this modified technique could be introduced for screening and detection of oocysts excreted in faeces of suspected animals of the Felidae family.

Cytauxzoon felis, susceptibilities of bobcats, 4 species of domestic farm animals, 9 species of laboratory animals, and 17 wildlife species to infection using infective material from domestic cats, Lynx rufus floridanus developed cytauxzoonosis with signs and lesions identical with those of domestic cats and died of disease, Lynx rufus rufus developed subclinical persistent parasitemia, results indicate that both species of bobcats may serve as reservoir hosts; sheep developed low persistent parasitemia without clinical signs, while other species of animals failed to produce evidence of cytauxzoonosis

Kier, A.B. | Wagner, J.E. | Morehouse, L.G.
Cytauxzoon felis, susceptibilities of (i) domestic cats to inoculation with infected bobcat blood and ground tissues; (ii) domestic cats to subinoculation with blood from cats having received bobcat blood; (iii) inoculated cats to subsequent challenge exposure with deep-frozen virulent inoculum of domestic cat origin; and (iv) eastern bobcat to reinoculation with various doses of virulent Cytauxzoon inoculum of domestic cat origin; additional experiments to determine if piroplasm levels in bobcats and domestic cats could be raised to maximize chances for further transmission of Cytauxzoon to domestic cats

| Individuals of the clam Mytella guyanensis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) from the estuarine region of the Cachoeira river (Ilhéus, Bahia) have been analyzed to detect the frequency of occurrence and infected sites by protozoans of the genus Nematopsis Schneider, 1892 (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida: Porosporidae), in the period between August 2005 and May 2006. A total of 480 individuals were analyzed, measuring between 34.5 and 74.9 mm of height (Average: 55.4 mm; DP ± 6.7). Nematopsis were found in 387 of them, occurring more frequently within the gills (298 animals) and the mantle (248). The parasite was also observed in the digestive gland and the musculature. Some severely infected individuals presented modifications in the conformation of the gills and the mantle.
