Ultrasonographic and biometric evaluation of the eye and orbit of dogs

The normal B-scan ultrasonographic anatomic features of the eye and orbit of mesocephalic and dolichocephalic dogs were described. The B-scan appearance of ocular and orbital structures correlated well with the visual morphologic features of the specimens. The eyes of mesocephalic and dolichocephalic dogs were measured by use of ultrasonographic methods; those measurements were compared with direct measurements of the specimens. The 2-tailed Student t-test was used for all statistical analyses (P = 0.05). Measurements made included mid-cornea to anterior lens surface, lens thickness, vitreous body (posterior lens surface to retina), and axial globe length. The A-scan measurements of all 4 ocular distances were significantly different, compared with direct measurements. The B-scan measurements of mid-cornea to anterior lens surface, lens thickness, and vitreous body were significantly different from direct measurements; however, there was no significant difference between B-scan and direct measurements of axial globe length. There was no significant difference between A- and B-scan measurements. These findings suggest that A- and B-scan measurements are similar and that B-scan measurements are reasonably accurate for axial globe determination. Several variables were compared by B-scan and direct measurement methods. The axial globe length of dolichocephalic dogs was significantly longer than that of mesocephalic dogs. The axial globe length of male and female dogs was not significantly different in mescephalic or dolichocephalic dogs. There was no difference in the axial globe length of right and left eyes in mesocephalic or dolichocephalic dogs.

Ninety-one equine aortic and cranial mesenteric arterial segments were evaluated ultrasonographically in a water bath. On the basis of pathologic evidence of verminous arteritis, arterial segments were classified into 4 categories, and the ultrasonographic characteristics of each group were evaluated. Normal arteries (class 1) were ultrasonographically characterized by a smooth luminal surface layer and uniform wall thickness and echogenicity. Arteries with only histopathologic evidence of verminous arteritis (class 2) were ultrasonographically characterized by a smooth luminal surface layer, uniform thickness, uniform echogenicity, and the presence of a hyperechoic luminal layer. Arteries with both gross and histopathologic evidence of verminous arterities (class 3) were characterized ultrasonographically by an irregular luminal surface layer, varying wall thickness, varying wall echogenicity, and the presence of a hyperechoic luminal layer. The ultrasonographic characteristics of arteries with luminal thrombosis (class 4) were an irregular luminal surface, varying wall thickness, and nonuniform echogenicity.

Thirty-eight grossly and histologically normal cat kidneys were examined ultrasonographically. The echogenicity of the renal cortex was subjectively evaluated by scoring it as largely or not largely different from the echogenicity of the renal medulla and as similar or not similar to the echogenicity of the renal sinus. The presence or absence of a medullary hyperechoic band was determined. The length, width, and height of each kidney was measured. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of each kidney were examined microscopically. The amount of fat vacuoles in the tubular epithelium of the renal cortex was scored as plentiful or not plentiful. The presence or absence of medullary band of mineral deposits within the lumina of renal tubules was determined. A plentiful amount of fat vacuoles in renal cortex was associated positively with a large difference in echogenicity between cortex and medulla (P less than 0.01) and with similar echogenicity of cortex and sinus (P less than 0.01). The presence of a medullary hyperechoic band was associated positively with a band of mineral deposits within medullary tubular lumen (P 0.01). Kidneys with a large difference in echogenicity between cortex and medulla and kidneys with a plentiful amount of fat vacuoles were not significantly different in size (P = 0.56). These groups were larger (P less than 0.01) in length, width, and height than were kidneys without a large difference in echogenicity between cortex and medulla and kidneys that did not have plentiful cortical fat vacuoles.

Ultrasonography was used to determine whether there is embryo reduction in mares iwth unilaterally fixed twins when a major portion of the vascularized area of the wall of one of the embryonic vesicles is in apposition with the wall of the adjacent vesicle, rather than with the endometrium (deprivation hypothesis). In addition, the effect of ovulatory pattern (synchronous and asynchronous) on the incidence of embryo reduction was studied. Twin vesicles were ultrasonically detected on days 11 to 15 (ovulation = day 0) and were examined daily until there was embryo reduction or until day 40. In 31 mares with twin embryonic vesicles, unilateral fixation (71%) was more frequent (P less than 0.05) than was bilateral fixation (29%). In 28 mares with known ovulatory patterns, synchronous ovulations did not affect the type of fixation (9/17 unilateral and 8/17 bilateral); however, for asynchronous ovulators the frequency of unilateral fixation (10/11) was greater (P less than 0.01) than the frequency of bilateral fixation (1/11). The incidence of embryo reduction was greater (P less than 0.01) for unilateral fixation (14/19) than for bilateral fixation (0/9) and was greater (P less than 0.05) for asynchronous ovulators (9/11) than for synchronous ovulators (5/17). In mares with embryo reduction, the reduction was complete before detection of both embryo propers (early reduction) in 10/14 and after detection of both embryo propers (late reduction) in 4/14. For 17 synchronous ovulators, fewer underwent early embryo reduction (0 mares) than late reduction (5 mares) or no reduction (12 mares; 4 unilateral and 8 bilateral), whereas in the 11 asynchronous ovulators, more underwent early reduction (8 mares) than late reduction (1 mare) or no reduction (2 mares; 1 unilateral and 1 bilateral; P less than 0.01). In mares with early embryo reduction, the orientation and spatial relationship of one vesicle relative to the other was not determinable until the embryo proper was detected. In the 2 mares in which the embryo proper of the survivor was detected before embryo reduction was complete, the embryo proper was located opposite to the site of reduction, ie, the vesicle that was to be eliminated impinged on the thin-walled area of the yolk sac wall of the survivor. The position of the embryo proper and its emerging allantoic sac seemed to determine whether a given conceptus survived or underwent late embryo reduction. The embryo proper, the vascularized wall of the yolk sac adjacent to the embryo proper, and the emerging allantoic sac were exposed to the endometrium (uterine lumen) in the surviving vesicles; in the vesicles that underwent reduction, much of the corresponding area of the vesicle wall was covered by the wall of the adjacent survivor. The results supported the deprivation hypothesis.

Transrectal ultrasonography was performed on the cranial mesenteric artery and its major branches in 23 conscious adult horses. Ultrasonographically, 25 arterial segments were classified as either normal or abnormal. These ultrasonographic classifications were later compared with the gross and histologic evaluations of each artery following necropsy of each horse. In this study, transrectal ultrasonography as a diagnostic test for verminous arteritis had a 90% sensitivity for detecting normal arteries and an 86% specificity for detecting abnormal arteries, suggesting that ultrasonography may be useful in the antemortem diagnosis of verminous arteritis.

Renal ultrasonographic changes were evaluated in 5 dogs administered 10 ml of commercial antifreeze (95% ethylene glycol)/kg of body weight, PO, and in 2 dogs given placebos. Studies were made prior to and after ingestion on an hourly basis over a period of 8 to 10 hours. All dogs were anesthetized immediately after toxin or placebo ingestion for the duration of the study. Renal cortical echogenicity was evaluated in comparison with that of the adjacent liver and spleen. Echogenicity of the renal medulla and definition of the corticomedullary juction were assessed. Within 4 hours after ethylene glycol administration, renal cortical echogenicity of all intoxicated dogs increased from normal to surpass that of the liver and approach or equal that of the spleen. Medullary echogenicity in all intoxicated dogs progressively increased over the course of the study, with changes recognized within 5 hours after ethylene glycol administration. An ultrasonographic pattern consisting of nearly equal, marked increase in cortical and medullary echogenicity and relatively hypoechoic corticomedullary junction and central medullary regions was recognized concurrent with the development of anuria in 3 of the 5 intoxicated dogs. Mild, transient increases in cortical and medullary echogenicity were observed in anesthetized control dogs. However, no statistical difference (P less than 0.05) was detected between baseline, peak, and terminal echogenicity values in these dogs. Blood and urine samples were collected hourly from intoxicated dogs to coincide with ultrasonographic studies. Most clinicopathologic values derived from these samples were not statistically different (P less than 0.05) from those reported in a study that used a similar intoxication protocol in nonanesthetized dogs.
