Mast cell tumours (MCTs) arise in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues in animals and humans and are one of the most common neoplasms of the skin in dogs. Cannabinoid type 2 receptor (CB2R), cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (p21) and matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) are potential targets for novel anti-tumour therapeutic strategies. This study evaluated by immunohistochemical means the reactivity of p21, MMP-1 and CB2R proteins in association with a three-tier grading system in cutaneous canine MCTs.

This article provides an overview of the current knowledge on chlamydiae, which are intracellular bacteria belonging to the Chlamydiaceae family. Whole-genome sequencing leads to great increases in the available data about Chlamydia spp. Recently, novel chlamydial taxons in various hosts living in different environments have been recognised. New species and taxons with Candidatus status have been recorded mainly in birds and reptiles. Chlamydia gallinacea is an emerging infectious agent in poultry with indirectly confirmed zoonotic potential. Recently, a new group of avian C. abortus strains with worldwide distribution in various wild bird families has been described. The definition of C. abortus species became outdated with the discovery of these strains and has been amended. It now includes two subgroups, mammalian and avian, the latter including all isolates hitherto referred to as atypical C. psittaci or C. psittaci/C. abortus intermediates.

A study was conducted to optimize the level of finger millet (Eleusine coracana) powder as a thickening agent in the chicken soup prepared with no added oil. Whole finger millet (FM) was powdered finely and used as thickening agent in chicken soup at 0 (control) 5(FM5), 10(FM10) and 15(FM15) parts levels. The pH significantly decreased with increase in the finger millet level where it was highest in control and lowest in FM15. In the sensory evaluation, appearance, flavour and mouth feel scores significantly decreased with increase in finger millet level. The consistency scores were significantly higher for the treatments with finger millet compared to control. The overall acceptability scores were comparable among the control, FM5 and FM10 treatments and significantly lower for FM15. Hence, from this study, it can be concluded that finger millet might be efficiently utilized as a thickening agent in chicken soup up to 10 parts level, which would fortify the nutritive value.

Chicken nuggets prepared from spent hens’ meat by incorporating fermented bamboo shoots at 10 per cent, beet root at 10per cent and cabbage at 15per cent levels were evaluated for different physicochemical, microbial and sensory qualities under frozen (-18±1°C) storage condition. The pH of all nuggets increased significantly (P<0.05) during the storage period. The hardness, redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and chromavalues of all the nuggets decreased significantly (P<0.05) during storage period. The ΔE values of all the nuggets increased during storage period. There was no growth of microorganisms in all the nuggets during the period. The beet root incorporated nuggets recorded better sensory qualities compared to other nuggets in the study under frozen (-18±1°C) storage up to 90 days.

Anaemia is one of the major clinical manifestations seen in various diseases in canines. Reticulocytes and erythrocyte counting are the hallmark for evaluating the anaemic status and bone marrow response to anaemia. In this study, a simple technique was developed and followed to count both reticulocytes simultaneously with the help of Neubauer counting chamber using the diluting fluids prepared from two different supravital stains to score the merit of the method for adoption. Blood samples for the study were collected from the dogs presented to Madras Veterinary College Teaching hospital. The dogs were classified into apparently healthy and anemic group with each of 30 dogs. The total erythrocytic count was significantly low in the anomalous group compared to the healthy group (p<0.01) and the corrected percentage was higher in the oculous group than in healthy group. The corrected percentage is called as corrected percentage (CRP). The increased corrected percentage of reticular cells (CRC) was significantly higher in ominous group. Moreover, the corrected value of CRP was significantly lower in anaesthetized dogs than in the healthy dogs. This technique can be utilised as an ideal laboratory tool in identification of the health status of the animal and to evaluate the treatment regimen in the animal.

Obstructive urolithiasis is a serious and potentially fatal condition in male small ruminants. It is caused by obstruction of urethral lumen at the distal portion of the sigmoid flexure and at the urolithic process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of surgical tube cystostomy in the management of obstructive urinary calculi in male sheep and goat. A total of 6 animals were studied (sheep-2 and goat-4) that were referred to Large animal clinics - Out Patient- Surgery Unit of Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with a history of anuria, dysuria and stranguria. In Tube cystostomy, the animals were positioned in right lateral recumbency. The bladder was approached in left paramedianregion cranial to the last pair of rudimentaryteats. The urine was drained and calculi in the bladder was removed with the forceps. The catheter was fixed in the urinary bladder by meansof purse string suture pattern using 3/0 or4/0 polyglecaprone. Then the abdominal muscles and skin were apposed. Biochemical analysis revealed significant increase in BUN & Creatinine pre-operatively and decreases post operatively. Postoperatively normograde contrast cystourethrography on day 1 revealed filling defect of contrast agent showing obstruction at the level of Sigmoid Flexure. Ultrasonographic examination after normal urination revealed presence of calculi and also the site of obstruction in the bladder. The time period taken to return for normal urination in Tube Cystostomy was (10.66 ± 0.06 days) and the wound healing of the surgical site was better in tube cystomy.

Gross anatomical structure of pelvic bone in conure bird was studied. The shape of the pelvic girdle was in the form of inverted blade and consisted of ilium, ischium and pubis, constituting the two pelvic bones of which the ilium was largest and between the two pelvic bones, the rhomboid shaped lumbosacral mass was observed. Above the level of acetabulum ilium was separated by a small bony ridge as pre and post acetabular part. Posterior end of ilium had a slender, linear and extended part and had a straight process which projected ventrally. There was no ilioneural canal. Ilium, ischium and pubis formed the acetabulum. The caudodorsal rim of acetabulum presented a triangular facet an anti-trochanter. Ischium was a thick and triangular bony plate below the level of posterior rim of the acetabulum. Ventral border of the ischium had an obturator foramen with broader caudal end. Ilium formed synostosis with pubis and ischium and a large ischio-pubic notch were also formed. Pubis was thin , slender bone extended behind the medial border of ischium. Ischium was bent posteromedially. Pubis was not fused with ischium to form obturator foramen, but formed a notch-like structure. The pectineal process was less developed.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a combination of endocrine and metabolic syndrome contributing to both the terms as a clinical feature in women. The present study was conducted to find the alleviative effect of aqueous extract of Asparagus racemosus against the induced PCOS in Wistar rats. About 60 Wistar rats (n=10) are randomly divided into 6 groups: Group 1 (control group), Group 2 (Asparagus racemosus control), Group 3 (PCOS control estradiol valerate 5 mg/rat), Group 4 (estradiol valerate + 1000 mg/kg Asparagus racemosus Prophylactic treatment from day 1 of induction of PCOS), Group 5 (estradiol valerate + 100 mg/kg Asparagus racemosus treatment, after induction of PCOS), Group 6 (Metformin 100 mg/kg). Haematological parameters such as glucose, total protein, albumin, ALT, AST, ALP, triglycerides, cholesterol, C reactive proteins, BUN and creatinine were studied in polycystic ovarian syndrome. Metformin group showed highly significant (P<0.01) reduction in haemoglobin, Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and significant (P< 0.05) reduction in Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC) compared to prophylactic, therapeutic and PCOS groups while PCOS group showed elevation in platelet count (P< 0.05). Significant increase (p < 0.05) in serum glucose, cholesterol and CRP noticed in the PCOS groups compared to prophylactic, therapeutic and metformin groups. The results indicated that Asparagus racemosus had partial alleviating effect on haemato-biochemical parameters caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome in Wistar rats.

Khillar is an indigenous cattle breed, predominant in Karnataka. Although, milk production of these indigenous breed is low as compared to crossbreds, these animals are reared for their sturdy nature, sustainability to draught, heat tolerance, disease resistance, adaptability to harsh climatic conditions and ability to survive and perform under scarce feed and fodder conditions. But, livestock farmers face lots of issues in management of Khillar Cattle. The present study was conducted to analyse the marketing and utilization pattern of Khillar cattle of Karnataka. A total of 240 Khillar cattle owners from 16 villages comprising 80 small farmers, 80 medium farmers and 80 large farmers were considered for the study and interviewed with the help of structured schedule. The results indicated that that majority of the farmers purchased Khillar cattle from the market (54.59 %) and most of them (58.75 per cent) selected the Khillar cattle based on both the breed characteristics and hair whorls, followed by hair whorls (21.25 per cent). Majority (89.58 per cent) of the farmers responded that negotiation followed by undercover method (10.42 %) was followed in the market. Among the overall farmers, Khillar cattle was majorly used for milking purpose (88.75 %), followed by use of Khillar bullocks for agricultural activities (52.5 %). Hence, there is an urgent need to assess and analyze the contribution of indigenous cattle in the livelihood of resource poor which may help the policy makers to take necessary steps to provide subsidized loan and insurance policies for the draught animals and also to provide basic amenities in the cattle markets.

The different parts of Murraya koenigii leaf are traditionally used for treatment of wide variety of ailments. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of curry leaves on growth and haemato-biochemical parameters in adjuvant induced arthritis. Sixty Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups containing ten each (n=10), Group I- Sham control, Group II- Plant extract only, Group III- Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) only, Group IV- CFA + ibuprofen, Group V- Prophylactic group, Group VI- Therapeutic group. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was induced by sub-plantar injection of Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA). The body weight gain and feed intake were measured at weekly intervals upto 28th days and blood was collected on 28 day for haematology and serum biochemistry. The analysis of parameters on body weight, feed intake and haematobiochemistry revealed that curry leaf extract had a considerable effect in preventing and ameliorating the severity of arthritis. Methanolic extract of curry leaves appears to be a promising natural remedy of RA.
