Biomechanical comparison of bone staple techniques for stabilizing tibial tuberosity fractures

This study compared the biomechanical properties of bone-stapling techniques with those of other fixation methods used for stabilizing tibial tuberosity fractures using 3-dimensionally (3D)-printed canine bone models. Twenty-eight 3D-printed bone models made from computed tomography scan files were used. Tibial tuberosity fractures were simulated using osteotomy. All samples were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 was stabilized with a pin and tension-band wire; group 2, with a pin and an 8 mm-wide bone staple; group 3, with 2 horizontally aligned pins and an 8 mm-wide bone staple; and group 4 with a 10 mm-wide bone staple. Tensile force was applied with vertical distraction until failure occurred. The load and displacement were recorded during the tests. The groups were compared based on the load required to cause displacements of 1, 2, and 3 mm. The maximum failure loads and modes were recorded. The loads at all displacements in group 4 were greater than those in groups 1, 2, and 3. The loads at 1, 2, and 3 mm displacements were similar in groups 1 and 3. There was no significant difference between groups 1 and 3. Groups 1 and 4 provided greater maximum failure loads than groups 2 and 3. Failure occurred because of tearing of the nylon rope, tibial fracture, wire breakage, pin bending, and fracture around the bone staple insertion. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that the bone-stapling technique is an acceptable alternative to tension-band wire fixation for the stabilization of tibial tuberosity fractures in canine bone models.

Syringobulbia is a rare neurological disorder characterized by a fluid-filled cavity in the brainstem. In this study, clinical signs, features on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the diseases present concurrently with syringobulbia were investigated in 33 small breed dogs. Most dogs (97%) had concurrent syringomyelia, and some dogs (24%) presented with vestibular or cranial nerve symptoms associated with the medulla oblongata. MRIs revealed slit-like, bulbous, and vertical linear shapes of the cavities on T2-weighted hyperintense and T1-weighted hypointense signals similar to the cerebrospinal fluid. Chiari-like malformations were identified in all dogs. This study highlights the association of syringobulbia with syringomyelia and Chiari-like malformations in small breed dogs with or without brainstem-associated clinical signs.

This study was conducted to investigate tiamulin (TML) residues in the edible tissues of orally dosed broiler chickens and to re-establish the withdrawal time (WT). Thirty-six healthy Ross broiler chickens were administered 0.5 (TML-1) and 2.5 kg (TML-2) per ton feed, respectively, of the drug containing TML 78 g/kg for 10 days. Twenty-four tissue samples were collected from 6 chickens in each of the TML-1 and TML-2 groups on 0, 1, 3, and 5 days after drug administration, respectively. The residual concentrations of TML were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The correlation coefficient of the calibration curves was 0.9978 to 0.9998, and the limits of detection and the limits of quantification (LOQ) were in the range of 0.03 to 0.06, and 0.1 to 0.2 µg/kg, respectively. Recoveries ranged between 89.0% to 116.7%, and the coefficients of variation were less than 13.9%. After the drug administration, TML in the TML-1 and TML2 groups was detected above the LOQ in 1 and 6 samples of liver, respectively, at day 0, and in 1 liver sample from both groups on day one. At 3 days after administration, TML was detected below the LOQ in all samples of TML-1 and TML-2. The calculated WT of TML in both TML-1 and TML-2 using the WT calculation program WT 1.4 was 0 days. In conclusion, the developed analytical method is suitable for detection, and the calculated WT of TML in poultry edible tissues is shorter than the current recommended WT of 7 days for TML in broiler chickens.

A 10-year-old spayed female Maltese presented with purpura and hematemesis. Initial laboratory evaluation revealed immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, but evidence of hemolytic anemia was not identified. Three milligrams of human intravenous immunoglobulin (hIVIG) was administered for 3 hours following prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil. A pale mucous membrane was identified, and the packed cell volume decreased by 3%. Blood film examination revealed significant spherocytosis with auto-agglutination. Blood transfusions and immunosuppression were continued for 4 days, and hIVIG was discontinued. This report describes a case of increased immune-mediated hemolysis after hIVIG administration, possibly due to new-onset immune-mediated hemolytic anemia or enhanced immunogenicity.

Dogs exhibit patterns of health issues that vary by life stage. An understanding of disease incidence with respect to breed and age/life stage could be an important component of canine health management and welfare. This study aimed to describe the age-specific disease incidence of 3 small dog breeds that attended veterinary clinics in the Republic of Korea, based on data from electronic veterinary medical records (EVMRs). A total of 40,785 EVMRs from Maltese (n = 21,355), Miniature Poodle (n = 11,658) and Shih Tzu dogs (n = 7,772) were analyzed. Common health problems in 3 small dog breeds were ‘diseases of the skin’ and ‘diseases of the ear,’ respectively. Among dogs aged ≤ 3 years, ‘preventive medicine’ was the most common cause cited for veterinary clinic visits. Among dogs aged 4 to 8 years, the most frequent health problems were ‘diseases of the skin.’ Among dogs aged 9 to 13 years, ‘heart diseases,’ ‘kidney diseases,’ ‘mammary gland tumor,’ and ‘neoplasia (unspecified)’ were considerably more frequent, compared to the rates in dogs ≤3 years. Among dogs aged ≥ 14 years, ‘heart diseases’ and ‘sneezing/cough’ were the main health problems. In all breeds, the frequencies of ‘diseases of circulatory system,’ ‘diseases of respiratory system,’ ‘diseases of the nervous system,’ ‘endocrine’ and ‘neoplasia’ increased rapidly with aging. This surveillance could inform strategies for disease screening tests and management based on life stage in these dog breeds and enable more effective health management.

The current study was deliberated to evaluate safety and quality of small scale Tallaga cheese sold in Egyptian markets, as well as detecting its fraud. Fifty samples were examined chemically and microbiologically with special reference to fatty acid profile and presence of inhibitory substances. Results showed that the mean values of fat, T.S, moisture and fat/T.S % were 38.13, 47.17, 52.80 and 69.24 %, respectively. Samples from twelve small scale plants were examined for fatty acid profile, the majority of examined samples lack butyric fatty acid in their profile that characterizes milk fat. A high content of palmitic acid reached to 48% found in some market samples, others had a high percent of unsaturated fatty acids as compared to control treatments prepared in lab which indicated the skimming of milk fat with addition of vegetable oils. The ratio of n-6/n-3 in most examined samples (83.33%) exceeds the permitted limits. On detecting addition of inhibitory substance one sample was found to contain benzoate and other contains carbonate. Microbiological examination of samples revealed that mean values of total bacterial, yeast and mold counts were 70×107, 20×107 and 10×102 CFU/g, respectively. This study recommends application of restricted regulations on small factories, labeling of its products must be mandatory in order not to fraud consumers, as well as great attention must be paid for using fatty acid profile for detecting adulteration without depending only on determining fat%.

This study aimed to isolate and characterize sulfur reducing bacteria from industrial wastewater and soil to remove sulfate. A total of 14 sulfate reducing bacterial (SRB) isolates were recovered from industrial wastewater and contaminated soil. Interestingly, bacterial isolate emr69 was selected as the highest sulfate reducer. Correspondingly, emr69 was characterized phenotypically and identified genotypically based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Enterobacter cloacae and deposited in Gen Bank database under accession number OR472728. The maximum sulfate reduction by E. cloacae emr69 against 2000 ppm (SO4-2) was 95% which obtained by adjusting the medium at pH 6 and growing the bacterium at 37°C under anaerobic conditions. The study suggests using of E. cloacae mr69 as a promising SRB for bioreduction of sulfate in industrial wastewater treatment.

The database was obtained from 4560 records multiple records were collected from 2000 to 2022 For a total of 2560 records for Sakha station and 2000 records for El-Qardah station of the Ministry Agriculture and land reclamation in Egypt, meteorological data were obtained from the central laboratory of Agricultural climate. The data was divided into two periods, the period from 2000 to 2010 (P1) and the period from 2011 to 2022 (P2). Thermal Humidity Index (THI) and season effect on productive traits (LTMY, TMY, LP and DP) were between significant (P<0.05) and high significant (P<0.01) For both groups, except the effect of THI on the DMY in (P2) and season effect on DMY in (P1), which were non-significant. Climate change in the period from (2011 to 2022) witnessed a rise in temperature (AT) and was followed by an increase in relative humidity (RH) and atmospheric pressure (AP), as well as an increase in the value of THI especially the summer season, which is hotter than the rest of the seasons this had a negative effect on the productive traits. Estimates of permanent environmental variance for the second period for most traits were lower than additive genetic variance it may indicate that sensitivity to heat stress is not specific to the cow but is hereditary. Heritability estimates are low to moderate for most milk production traits show the possibility of improving genetically by selecting the most valuable cows for Heritability or genetic selection of cows and improving herd management.

Avian colibacillosis is one of the most serious diseases that affect poultry and causes substantial morbidity and mortality rates as well as high economic losses. E. coli, are capable of acquiring resistance genes via gene transfer. The development of extended spectrum lactamases, or broad-spectrum lactamases, in E. coli is the most serious resistance mechanism. The goal of the current study was to detect the resistance associated genes of multi drug resistant E. coli isolated from broiler chicken by using PCR technique. In the current study PCR applied on 10 multidrug resistant E. coli isolates for detecting β-lactamases resistance genes (blaTEM, blaSHV), integron resistance gene (Int1, Int3), PCR was also used to detect disinfectant resistance genes as Quaternary ammonium compounds resistance genes (QacCD, QacA/B and QacED1). PCR results for antibiotic resistance associated gene showed that (10/10) of tested isolates had blaTEM and int1(10/10), blaSHV (6/10) and int3 (2/10) also PCR results for disinfectant resistance associated genes showed that (8/10) of E. coli isolates had QacED1, QacCD (2/10), and QacA/B (2/10). The (10) broilers flocks investigated in the study were infected with multi drug resistant, strains of E. coli, that haboured β-lactamases, integron resistance associated gene and quaternary ammonium compounds resistance genes.

Methotrexate, a folic acid molecular alternative inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), is employed for the treatment of various types of tumors combined with aspirin; acetylsalicylic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The present study aimed to detect the combined effects of both medications on MCF7 cell line activity. The drug combinations of aspirin and methotrexate were tested for cytotoxicity against the breast cancer cell line MCF7 using the MTT assay. The results showed that methotrexate, aspirin, and combination drugs have potent cytotoxicity against MCF7 cells. The mean IC50 of the methotrexate-treated group was 155.7 µg/ml (range, 77.89 to 311µg/ml. However, the IC50 of the aspirin-treated group was 465 µg/ml (range, 243.3 to 888.6 µg/ml). The IC50 of combination drugs used in the CompuSyn Isobologram on MCF7 cell lines, the cytotoxicity of medications methotrexate, aspirin, and combination demonstrated a synergistic action, and combination drugs have potent cytotoxicity against MCF7 cell lines. In conclusion, the combination of methotrexate and aspirin has a potent anticancer effect.
