Cryptosporidium infection is one of the most common causes of parasitic diarrhoea worldwide in cattle and humans. In developing countries, human cryptosporidiosis is most prevalent during early childhood and links between zoonotic infection and animal related activities have been demonstrated. This study investigated the prevalence and species/genotype distribution of Cryptosporidium among children (< 5 years) and calves (< 6 months) living in a rural farming area adjacent to the Kruger National Park in South Africa, where interactions between humans and wild and domestic animals are known to occur. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 8/143 stool samples of children recruited within the hospital system (5.6%; 95% CI 2.4%, 10.7%) and in 2/352 faecal samples of calves (0.6%; 95% CI 0.1%, 2.0%) using the modified Ziehl–Neelsen (MZN) staining technique. Microscopy positive samples from children were further analysed by PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene and identified as Cryptosporidium hominis (3/4) and Cryptosporidium meleagridis (1/4). Regardless of the microscopy outcome, randomly selected samples (n = 36) from calves 0–4 months of age were amplified and sequenced at the 18S rRNA gene using nested PCR. Two calves tested positive (5.6%; 95% CI 1.7%, 18.7%), and revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium bovis. The detection of only two zoonotic species (C. parvum in one calf and C. meleagridis in one child) suggests that zoonotic cryptosporidiosis is not currently widespread in our study area; however, the potential exists for amplification of transmission in an immunocompromised population. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Haemonchus contortus infection on rams’ haematological, biochemical and clinical parameters and reproductive performances. A total number of 12 Barbarine rams (control and infected) were included in the experiment. The infected group received 30 000 H. contortus third-stage larvae orally. Each ram’s ejaculate was immediately evaluated for volume, sperm cell concentration and mortality rate. At the end of the experiment (day 82 post-infection), which lasted 89 days, serial blood samples were collected in order to assess plasma testosterone and luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations. There was an effect of time, infection and their interaction on haematological parameters (p < 0.001). In infected rams, haematocrit, red blood cell count and haemoglobin started to decrease from 21 days post-infection. There was an effect of time and infection for albumin. For total protein, only infection had a statistically significant effect. For glucose, only time had a statistically significant effect. Concentrations were significantly lower in infected rams compared to control animals. A significant effect of infection and time on sperm concentrations and sperm mortality was observed. The effect of infection appears in time for sperm concentrations at days 69 and 76 post-infection. Sperm mortality rate was significantly higher in infected animals at day 46 post-infection when compared to control group (p < 0.05). Finally, plasma testosterone traits (average concentration, cumulated levels during the sampling period and pulse frequency) were depressed in infected rams when compared to control counterparts; none of these endocrine traits were affected for plasma LH.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease that occurs worldwide and is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of C. burnetii infection in aborted sheep in eastern Turkey using PCR. A total of 200 fetuses were collected from aborted sheep belonging to 200 herds in different locations in the eastern part of Turkey. Foetal organ samples such as liver, spleen, lung and stomach were taken and the DNA was purified from two hundred pooled samples. PCR analysis of C. burnetii presence in infected organs was performed, and 4 samples (2%) were found positive. In addition, the pooled organ suspensions were inoculated to embryonated chicken eggs, and PCR analysis of yolk sacs showed C. burnetii DNA in 5 samples (2.5%). This study shows that C. burnetii infection has an important role in sheep abortions in eastern Anatolia region.

ANIMALS 15 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES Dogs were randomly assigned to 3 groups (5 dogs/group) and received a single CT-guided lumbosacral facet joint, transforaminal epidural, or translaminar epidural injection of methylprednisolone acetate (0.1 mg/kg). Contrast medium was injected prior to injection of methylprednisolone to verify needle placement. Neurologic examinations were performed 1, 3, 7, and 10 days after the injection. In dogs with neurologic abnormalities, a final neurologic examination was performed 24 days after the procedure. RESULTS Methylprednisolone injections were successfully performed in 14 of the 15 dogs. In 1 dog, vascular puncture occurred, and the methylprednisolone injection was not performed. No major or minor complications were identified during or immediately after the procedure, other than mild transient hyperthermia. During follow-up neurologic examinations, no motor, sensory, or postural deficits were identified, other than mild alterations in the patellar, withdrawal, cranial tibial, and perineal reflexes in some dogs. Overall, altered reflexes were observed in 11 of the 14 dogs, during 27 of 65 neurologic examinations. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggested that CT-guided lumbosacral facet joint, transforaminal epidural, and translaminar epidural injections of methylprednisolone acetate were associated with few complications in healthy dogs. However, the number of dogs evaluated was small, and additional studies are needed to assess clinical efficacy and safety of these procedures.

Os procedimentos anestésicos em animais são amplamente utilizados em hospitais para cirurgias de rotina. Para a indução anestésica em cães o propofol tem se mostrado o fármaco de escolha. O objetivo deste estudo foi a avaliação da indução anestésica com propofol ou propofol-cetamina. Vinte cães foram divididos de forma aleatória nos grupos com tratamento e controle. Em todos os pacientes administrou-se acepromazina (0,05 mg kg-1) e fentanil (5 µg kg-1) como medicação pré-anestésica por via intramuscular (IM). Nos cães do grupo de tratamento foi administrado cetamina (1 mg kg-1), enquanto que os cães do grupo controle receberam solução salina a 0,9%, pela via intravenosa (IV). A indução da anestesia foi realizada com propofol IV a uma taxa de 1 mL minuto-1. Os padrões cardiopulmonares foram avaliados antes da aplicação da medicação pré-anestésica, 15 minutos após a mesma e após a indução da anestesia. Além disso, avaliou-se o escore de intubação traqueal, a presença de efeitos adversos e a dose de propofol necessária para a indução da anestesia. De forma significativa, o grupo controle apresentou mais efeitos adversos e alterações nos padrões cardiopulmonares quando comparado com o grupo de tratamento. Houve uma redução clinicamente importante da dose de propofol necessária para a indução de anestesia quando associado à cetamina. A associação de cetamina ao propofol para indução de anestesia em cães saudáveis foi capaz de reduzir a dose do anestésico geral necessária para intubação traqueal. Além disso, houve uma redução na ocorrência de efeitos adversos e depressão cardiopulmonar, o que permitiu um procedimento mais seguro para os pacientes. | Anesthetic procedures in animals are widely used in hospital for routine surgery. The objectives of this study were the assessment of induction of anesthesia using propofol or propofol-ketamine. Twenty client-owned dogs were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. All patients were administered acepromazine (0.05 mg kg-1) and fentanyl (5 µg kg-1) for premedication by intramuscular (IM) injection. Dogs in the treatment group were administered ketamine (1 mg kg-1), while dogs in the control group were administered 0.9% saline solution, by intravenous (IV) injection. Induction of anesthesia was done using IV propofol at a rate of 1 mL minute-1. Poucos trabalhos descrevem a ocorrência dos agentes do complexo respiratório felino, Herpesvírus Felino tipo 1 (FHV-1) e Chlamydophila felis, e a coinfecção com o vírus da imunodeficiência felina (FIV) e leucemia viral felina (FeLV) em felinos não domésticos no Brasil. Entre 2009 e 2010, 72 amostras de swab de conjuntiva e de soro foram coletados de oito espécies de felinos não domésticos (Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus tigrinus, Panthera leo, Panthera tigris, Puma concolor, Puma yagouaroundi, Oncifelis colocolo, and Panthera onca) mantidos em cativeiro em zoológicos brasileiros. O DNA foi extraído das amostras de swab de conjuntiva para detecção de Chlamydophila sp e FHV-1 pela PCR. Anticorpos para FIV e antígeno para FeLV foram determinados pelo kit comercial de ELISA. Anticorpos para FIV foram detectados em cinco felídeos (6,9%). Nenhuma amostra foi positiva para a presença de antígeno de FeLV. Um (1,3%) dos 72 felinos não domésticos apresentou fragmentos de DNA de Chlamydophila sp e FHV-1 pela PCR. Este felino era uma jaguatirica que não apresentou anticorpos para FIV e nem antígeno para FelV. One (1.3%) out of 72 non-domestic felid conjunctival swab samples was positive for Chlamydophilasp. and Feline Herpesvirus-1 in PCR. This felid was an ocelot and was negative for FIV and FeLV. The results of this survey showed the occurrence of co-infection with C. felis and FHV-1 in an ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) in Brazil.

Little is known about the occurrence of feline upper respiratory tract disease agents, namely Feline Herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) and Chlamydophila felis, and co-infection of these agents with Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) in non-domestic felids in Brazil. Amostras de soro de 83 porcos-monteiro (Sus scrofa) selvagens, oriundos da região de Nhecolândia, Pantanal do Mato Grosso, Brasil, foram examinadas para a presença de anticorpos contra Neospora caninum pela reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI) com ponto de corte de 50. A ocorrência de anticorpos foi de 10,8%, com um animal apresentando título de 1:200, quatro com 1:400 e quatro com 1:800. Quando analisados pelo teste do χ2, foi observada a existência de associação entre sexo e presença de anticorpos, com as fêmeas apresentando ocorrência de 20,5% e os machos 2,3% (p = 0,017). Não houve associação entre idade e ocorrência de anticorpos contra este parasito. O objetivo deste estudo prospectivo foi avaliar a resposta clínica de cães com linfoma cutâneo tratados com lomustina (CCNU) e identificar possíveis efeitos adversos e toxicidade durante o tratamento. Quinze cães, sendo 7 fêmeas e 8 machos, com idades entre 5 e 17 anos diagnosticados com linfoma cutâneo por avaliação histopatológica foram selecionados e tratados com lomustina na dose de 90 mg/m2 a cada três semanas. Os cães foram monitorados por avaliação hematológica e bioquímica sérica antes e durante o tratamento. A resposta parcial foi observada em 53,3% dos animais. Nenhum dos animais apresentou resposta completa e sete animais (46,6%) apresentaram progressão da doença. O tempo médio de sobrevida foi de 22 dias. As principais alterações hematológicas e bioquímicas observadas após o tratamento foram leucopenia (73,3%), trombocitopenia (60%) e anemia (46,1%). Sinais de toxicidade renal e hepática foram observados em 40% e 73,3% dos cães, respectivamente. Durante o tratamento foram afetados os parâmetros hematócrito, proteínas séricas totais, contagem de leucócitos, contagem de neutrófilos, creatinina sérica, ALT, GGT, fosfatase alcalina e densidade urinária. O uso de lomustina como monoterapia no tratamento do linfoma cutâneo canino foi efetivo; entretanto, efeitos adversos ocorreram e comprometeram a qualidade de vida da maioria dos animais neste estudo. The use of lomustine as a monotherapy in the treatment of canine cutaneous lymphoma was effective; however, adverse effects occurred and compromised the quality of life of the majority of dogs in this study. Therefore, lower doses of lomustine should be considered in future studies.

O Brasil é o maior exportador e terceiro maior produtor mundial de carne de frango. A fim de manter a competitividade, o setor produtivo deve estar sempre alerta às exigências dos consumidores e a preocupação com o bem-estar animal é uma tendência crescente. Aspectos envolvendo bem-estar animal são particularmente críticos no abate de frangos de corte. Este estudo avaliou a insensibilização de frangos em uma câmara com atmosfera enriquecida de CO2 para reduzir o estresse das aves, em comparação com a insensibilização elétrica em cuba d’água, o método de atordoamento mais usual no abate de frangos. Foi comparada a reação das aves quando expostas a uma alta concentração de CO2 (30%) ou a uma concentração inicial de 10% de CO2, elevada gradualmente até 30%. O efeito da mistura de argônio com CO2 também foi avaliado, sempre visando a redução das reações de desconforto das aves. Cerca de dois terços das aves apresentaram reações evidentes de desconforto antes do atordoamento, em todos os parâmetros de insensibilização gasosa utilizados, porém, as concentrações sanguíneas de corticosterona e glicose, usados como indicadores de estresse, indicaram que a insensibilização com CO2 promoveu o bem-estar das aves. O tempo de exposição ao CO2 necessário para o atordoamento das aves e o tempo de recuperação da consciência após a saída da câmara de gás apresentou ampla variação. A insensibilização por atmosfera controlada de CO2 facilitou o manejo das aves durante o abate, mas serão necessários mais estudos para desenvolver essa alternativa tecnológica, de forma a torná-la viável para aplicação industrial. | Brazil is the world’s largest exporter and third largest producer of chicken meat. To maintain competitiveness, the productive sector must always be alert to consumer demands, and concern about animal welfare is a growing tendency. Aspects involving animal welfare are especially critical in the slaughter of broiler chickens.
