Ecotoxicological effects evoked in hydrophytes by leachates of invasive Acer negundo and autochthonous Alnus glutinosa fallen off leaves during their microbial decomposition

Throughout 90-day biodegradation under microaerobic conditions, invasive to Lithuania species boxelder maple (Acer negundo) leaves lost 1.5-fold more biomass than that of autochthonous black alder (Alnus glutinosa), releasing higher contents of Ntot, ammonium and generating higher BOD7. Boxelder maple leaf leachates were characterized by higher total bacterial numbers and colony numbers of heterotrophic and cellulose-decomposing bacteria than those of black alder. The higher toxicity of A. negundo aqueous extracts and leachates to charophyte cell (Nitellopsis obtusa), the inhabitant of clean lakes, were manifested at mortality and membrane depolarization levels, while the effect on H+-ATPase activity in membrane preparations from the same algae was stronger in case of A. glutinosa. Duckweed (Lemna minor), a bioindicator of eutrophic waters, was more sensitive to leaf leachates of A. glutinosa. Fallen leaves and leaf litter leachates from invasive and native species of trees, which enter water body, affect differently microbial biodestruction and aquatic vegetation in freshwater systems.

The Effect of Air Pollution on Leaf Iron (Fe) Concentration and Activity of Fe-Dependent Antioxidant Enzymes in Maple

Iron (Fe) nutrition status and activity of Fe-dependent enzymes is suggested to be affected by air pollution. This study was aimed to investigate changes in leaf Fe, zinc (Zn), chlorophyll (a, b), and carotenoid concentration and activity of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POX) in the leaves of maple (Acer negundo L.) with distance from two major sources of air pollution, i.e., Oil Refinery of Shiraz (ORS) operations and urban traffic of Imam Hossein square (AS) in Shiraz, Iran. By increasing the distance from the ORS, Fe, Zn, and chlorophyll concentration in the maple leaves increased. These changes were associated with lower intensity of chlorosis symptoms on the leaves of maple trees with distance from the ORS. Leaf activity of CAT increased with increasing distance from the ORS. Changes in concentration of carotenoids and activity of POX did not follow a distinct trend with distance from both pollution sources. No regular pattern was observed for changes in the measured parameters with distance from the urban traffic of Imam Hossein square (AS), as another major source of air pollution in the studied region. This was due to irregular changes in the concentrations of air pollutants across the sampling pathway. According to the results, significant impairment in Fe nutritional status is expected for plants exposed to the air pollution, although further studies are needed to clarify the physiological reasons of Fe chlorosis under air pollution stress.

In this study, the effects of industrial and urban pollution on Pb, Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn accumulation, peroxidase activity, and pigment and protein contents were investigated in shrub and tree leaves in Antakya, Turkey. We determined that industrial and traffic activities produce the most plant-incorporated air pollutants in Antakya City. Cu and Al amounts were high in plants in the urban street location and Cd, Pb, and Zn amounts where high for all plants in the industrial site. Acer negundo L. showed maximum Pb and Zn accumulation at the industrial site and Al accumulation for the urban street site. Higher Cd and Cu amounts were detected in Platanus orientalis L. and Nerium oleander L. in the industrial and urban street sites, respectively. Compared to the control site, decreases in pigment and total soluble protein contents and increases in peroxidase enzyme activity were more evident in industrial and urban street sites. Our results indicated that industry and urban air pollution is high in Antakya City and Pb pollution was at an especially alarming level for vegetation and human health.

Atmospheric gaseous pollutants can induce qualitative and quantitative changes in airborne pollen characteristics. In this work, it was investigated the effects of carbon dioxide (CO₂) on Acer negundo pollen fertility, protein content, allergenic properties, and carbohydrates. Pollen was collected directly from the anthers and in vitro exposed to three CO₂levels (500, 1000, and 3000 ppm) for 6 and 24 h in an environmental chamber. Pollen fertility was determined using viability and germination assays, total soluble protein was determined with Coomassie Protein Assay Reagent, and the antigenic and allergenic properties were investigated by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunological techniques using patients’ sera. Also, pollen fructose, sucrose, and glucose values were determined. Carbon dioxide exposure affected negatively pollen fertility, total soluble protein content, and fructose content. The patient sera revealed increased IgE reactivity to proteins of A. negundo pollen exposed to increasing levels of the pollutant. No changes were detected in the SDS-PAGE protein profiles and in sucrose and glucose levels. Our results indicate that increase in atmospheric CO₂concentrations can have a negative influence of some features of A. negundo airborne pollen that can influence the reproductive processes as well as respiratory pollen allergies in the future.
