International audience | Plastic pollution, a global threat to environmental and human health, is now ubiquitous in the environment, including agricultural soils receiving urban compost amendments. Yet, the accumulation pattern of microplastics in soils are still to be disentangled, with regards to their sources and/or their physical properties such as morphotypes. The aim of this study was to identify the accumulation patterns of coarse microplastics resulting from the long-term amendment of soil with urban waste composts. To this end, we used a field experiment receiving three different urban composts derived from municipal solid waste, biowaste, and a mixture of sewage sludge and green waste. We isolated 1417 coarse microplastic particles from a 21-year archive of soil and compost samples, using density fractionation followed by oxidation, and used Py-GC/MS for polymer identification. Different compost types led to different coarse microplastics accumulation levels. The accumulation pattern showed increasing CMP contents in soils over time. After 21 years of experiment, the calculated number of CMP was in accordance with the estimated values for all three compost types but it was not the case for the CMP mass. No difference of evolution pattern was found between films and fragments. We proposed that biotic transport or abiotic weathering and fragmentation could explain such differences in CMP evolution pattern.

International audience | Microplastic (MP) input into agroecosystems is of particular concern as their sources are diverse (mulching films, biosolid application, wastewater irrigation, flooding, atmospheric input, road runoff). Compost application, which is needed to sustain soil ecosystem services in the context of a circular economy, may be a source of microplastics. The aim of this study was to evaluate how different composts derived from urban wastes impact the nature and quantity of coarse (2-5 mm) microplastics (CMP) in soils, using a long-term field experiment in France. Composts resulting from different levels of urban waste sorting were investigated. Our approach included the isolation of microplastics from composts and amended soils followed by their characterization using pyrolysis GC/MS spectrometry. We found that coarse microplastic concentrations varied from 26.9 to 417 kg per hectare depending on the compost type, after 22 years of bi-annual application. These values may be higher than for conventional agricultural practices, as application rate was twice as high as for normal practices. Composts made from municipal solid waste were by far the organic amendments leading to the highest quantity of plastic particles in soils, emphasizing the urgent need for limiting plastic use in packaging and for improving household biowaste sorting. Our results strongly suggest that standards regulating organic matter amendment application should take microplastics into account in order to prevent contamination of (agricultural) soils. Moreover, although no impacts on the soil bio-physico-chemical parameters has been noted so far. However, given the huge microplastic inputs, there is an urgent need to better evaluate their effect on soil functioning.

Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential 298 times greater than that of CO2. In agricultural soils, N2O emissions are influenced by a large number of environmental characteristics and crop management techniques that are not systematically reported in experiments. Random Forest (RF) is a machine learning method that can handle missing data and ranks input variables on the basis of their importance. We aimed to predict N2O emission on the basis of local information, to rank environmental and crop management variables according to their influence on N2O emission, and to compare the performances of RI: with several regression models. RF outperformed the regression models for predictive purposes, and this approach led to the identification of three important input variables: N fertilization, type of crop, and experiment duration. This method could be used in the future for prediction of N2O emissions from local information. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

2022

Since the fifties, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) had been used in agriculture to protect vegetables. Two decades after their ban by the Stockholm convention in 2001, OCPs are still present in agricultural soils inducing vegetable contamination with concentrations above Maximum Residue Level (MRL). This is a major concern for a 5 km² peri-urban vegetable growing valley located in the south west of France. In the present work, the sampling method was developed to clarify the spatial distribution of one OCP, Dieldrin, and its relationship with soil properties at the scale of study area. A total of 99 soil samples was collected for physicochemical analyses and Dieldrin concentrations. Results show Dieldrin concentrations in soils up to 204 μg kg⁻¹. The horizontal distribution of this pesticide is heterogeneous at the study area scale but homogeneous in each reference plot studied. About 85% of the contamination was located in the top soil layers (0–40 cm depth), but Dieldrin may still be quantified at a depth of 80 cm. Among all soil physicochemical parameters analysed, SOM was the most significantly related (P < 10⁻⁴) with Dieldrin concentrations, once different grain size fractions were considered. Moreover, results indicate a 33 times higher Dieldrin concentration and/or extractability for coarse sand than for other grain size fractions. These results show that the developed sampling method is adapted for the study area scale as it helps understanding the factors influencing the spatial distribution of Dieldrin. Historical amendments are the predominant factor for the horizontal contamination and deep ploughing for the vertical contamination. Also, the variations of coarse sand repartition in soils prevents identification of relationships between SOM and Dieldrin contamination in bulk soil. Further investigation is required to explain these relationships but these results highlight why no clear relationship between OCPs and SOM was previously identified.

There has been an increasing interest in the pollution caused by meso- and microplastics (MMPs) in terrestrial ecosystems. Mulch film was once considered to be the most important source of MMPs in the mulching cultivated soil. However, the academic community has not given sufficient scientific evidence. In this study, stratified random sampling method was used to selectively interview households in Hebei province, China (400 households, 20 villages, 5 counties). Finally, household characteristics and mulch film use behavior of 41 households were collected, and corresponding soil samples were sampled. The results showed that 1) the abundance of MMPs was 29.3 ± 33.1 items·kg⁻¹ (DW) and the particle size of MMPs was 2.95 × 10³±1.75 × 10³ μm, and the proportion of MMPs derived from Polyethylene (PE) was only 18.8%; 2) the mass of MMPs was 2.90 ± 3.72 mg kg⁻¹ (DW) and the proportion of PE MMPs was 43.75%, which has the highest mass percentage; 3) After controlling the endogenous and dummy variables, the use history of mulch film (HistMF) was found to be positively correlated to the abundance of MMPs and inversely correlated to the particle size, but nor with the mass of MMPs; 4) Regarding the heterogeneous characteristics of MMPs, including particle size, color, shape, and type, the findings found the absence of a significant correlation between HistMF and the abundance and mass of PE. In summary, mulch-derived MMPs are not the primary source of MMPs in the mulching cultivated soil in terms of abundance but probably be in terms of mass.

Using the Spectral characteristics of gold nanorods to investigate heavy metals Pb in agricultural soils. Studied included: (1) The effects of humic acid on Pb transformation and its formation changing were explored. The laboratory model was established to simulate Pb leaching process in the soil and investigated the change of total Pb content at different layers. (2) The migration and transformation of different forms Pb were studied by the nano system. The effect of humic acid and pH were analyzed based on the nano-analysis method. (3) The relationship between various forms Pb irons were analyzed. (4) The data showed that ion exchange state and iron-manganese oxidation state Pb were more likely to enriched at 0 cm depth, and organic bound state was more likely to enriched at 10 cm depth. Humic acid increased the solidify ability of different forms of Pb in agricultural soil, and the analysis system was efficient to supply the exactly transition process.

The problem of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in farmland is a key issue in global pollution prevention and control and has an important impact on environmental safety, human health, and sustainable agricultural development. Based on the climate background of high–latitude cold regions, this study simulated freeze–thaw cycles through indoor tests. Different initial conditions, such as biochar application rates (0%, 1%, 2%) and different initial soil moisture contents (15%, 20%, 25%), were set to explore the morphological changes in cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in soil and the response relationship to the changes in soil physicochemical properties. The results indicate that soil pH decreases during freeze–thaw cycles, and soil alkalinity increases with increasing biochar content. Freeze–thaw cycles caused the total amount of PTEs to have a U–shaped distribution, and the amount of PTEs in the soluble (SOL) and reducible (RED) fraction increased by 0.28–56.19%. Biochar reduced the amount of Cd and Pb migration in the soil, and an increase in soil moisture content reduced the availability of Cd and Pb in the soil. Freezing and thawing damaged the soil structure, and biochar reduced the fractionation of small particle aggregates by enhancing the stability of soil aggregates, thereby reducing the soil's ability to adsorb Cd and Pb. In summary, for farmland soil remediation and pollution control, the application of biochar has a certain ability to optimize soil properties. Considering the distribution of PTEs in the soil and the physicochemical properties of the soil, the application of 1% biochar to soil with a 20% moisture content is optimal for regulating seasonally frozen soil remediation.

Plastic film mulching and use of wastewaters for irrigation have been common agricultural practices for over half a century in Tunisia, especially in arid regions, resulting in the undesired creation of a pathway for microplastics (MPs) to enter farmland soil. In order to assess the extent and characteristics of soil contamination by MPs in the Moknine province, an area of intensive agricultural practices, 16 farmland soil samples were collected and characterized. The total concentration of targeted MPs was 50–880 items/kg; among them, the most common MPs type being polypropylene (PP), mainly occurring as white/transparent fibers with small size (cross section <0.3 mm). SEM images of MPs surfaces revealed multiple features related to environmental exposure and degradation. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and pyrolysis-GC/MS analyses enabled the accurate identification of MPs separated from the embedding soil micro- and macro-aggregates. Finally, contamination of the polymeric microparticles with a broad range of metals was found by ICP-MS analysis, suggesting that MPs can be vectors for transporting heavy metals in the soil and indicators of soil contamination as a result of mismanagement of industrial wastewaters.

2022
Hui, Kunlong | Cui, Yini | Tan, Wenbing
Because of a shortage of water resources, sewage irrigation has become a popular management tool for farmland soil in arid areas of China; however, this has led to the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil. Soil is an important component of ecosystems, and nitrogen is an important nutrient required for plant growth. Nitrogen input can alter the physical, chemical, and biological processes in soil and thus lead to changes in soil organic matter and organic pollutants. However, whether these changes affect the accumulation of PAHs and whether such accumulation differs in the low-density fraction (LF) and high-density fraction (HF) of soil remains unclear. In this study, the response of PAHs in soil to nitrogen input (0, 100, 200, and 300 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, respectively), including differences in LF and HF, were investigated through field experiments in a typical sewage-irrigated area. The results showed that nitrogen input could increase the concentrations of PAHs in soil from (7.6 ± 1.1) × 10³ to (10.4 ± 0.6) × 10³ μg kg⁻¹ and lead to striking differences between the LF ((5.06 ± 0.75) × 10³ to (1.89 ± 0.18) × 10³ μg kg⁻¹) and HF ((2.54 ± 0.36) × 10³ to (8.54 ± 0.44) × 10³ μg kg⁻¹). Given the significant increase in global nitrogen input, our findings have implications for the optimization and management of agricultural activities in sewage irrigation areas, such as soil investigation before fertilization, the use of soil improvers, and the improvement of soil planting measures.

The occurrence of organic pollutants in soil is a major environmental concern. These compounds can reach the soil in different ways. Point sources, related to pesticides that are used intentionally, can be applied directly to the soil, or reach the soil indirectly due to application to the aerial parts of crops. On the other hand, non-point sources, which reach soils collaterally during irrigation and/or fertilization, or due to the proximity of plots to industrialized urban centers. Long-range transport of global organic pollutants must also be taken into account. In this study, 218 pesticides, 49 persistent organic pollutants, 37 pharmaceutical active compounds and 6 anticoagulant rodenticides were analyzed in 139 agricultural soil samples collected between 2018 and 2020 in the Macaronesia. This region comprised four inhabited archipelagos (Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Madeira) for which agriculture is an important and traditional economic activity. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the levels of organic compound contamination of agricultural soils of the Macaronesia. As expected, the most frequently detected compounds were pesticides, mainly fungicides and insecticides. The Canary Islands presented the highest number of residues, with particularly high concentrations of DDT metabolites (p,p’ DDE: 149.5 ± 473.4 ng g⁻¹; p,p’ DDD: 16.6 ± 35.6 ng g⁻¹) and of the recently used pesticide fenbutatin oxide (302.1 ± 589.7 ng g⁻¹). Cape Verde was the archipelago with the least contaminated soils. Very few pharmaceutical active compounds have been detected in all archipelagos (eprinomectin, fenbendazole, oxfendazole and sulfadiazine). These results highlight the need to promote soil monitoring programs and to establish maximum residue limits in soils, which currently do not exist at either continental or local level.
