Phytotoxicity and uptake of roxarsone by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings
2016
Fu, Qing-Long | Blaney, Lee | Zhou, Dong-Mei
Roxarsone (ROX), the primary aromatic arsenical additive (AAA) used in animal feeding operations, is of increasing concern to environmental and human health due to land application of ROX-laden animal manure. Few studies have investigated the phytotoxicity, uptake mechanisms, and speciation of AAA in crop plants. In this study, wheat seedlings were employed to address these issues under hydroponic conditions. Compared to inorganic arsenic, ROX was less toxic to wheat root elongation. Wheat roots were more sensitive to ROX stress than shoots. For the first time, metabolized inorganic arsenic was detected in plants, although ROX was the predominant detected arsenic species in wheat seedlings. ROX uptake and toxicity to roots were inhibited by humic acid at concentrations higher than 50 mg/L due to interaction with ROX. Phosphate enhanced ROX uptake, but no trends were observed for ROX uptake in the presence of glycerol at concentrations lower than 250 mM. In addition, ROX uptake was significantly decreased by silicate (Si(IV), 0.5–10 mM) and the metabolic inhibitor, 2,4-dinitrophenol (0.5–2 mM), indicating that ROX transport into wheat roots was actively mediated by Si(IV)-sensitive transporters. These findings provide important insights into the fate and speciation of AAA in soil-water-plant systems relevant to human health.

2016
Prathumchai, Nuchnapa | Polprasert, Chongchin | Englande, A. J.
Although phosphorus (P) is an essential element needed for all lives, excess P can be harmful to the environment. The objective of this study aims to determine P flows in the fisheries sector of Thailand consisting of both sea and freshwater activities of captures and cultures. Currently, the annual fisheries catch averages 3.44 ± 0.50 Mt. Most comes from marine capture 1.95 ± 0.46 Mt, followed by coastal aquaculture 0.78 ± 0.09 Mt, freshwater aquaculture 0.49 ± 0.05 Mt, and inland capture 0.22 ± 0.01 Mt. Of this total, about 11% is contained in fresh products directly sold in local markets for consumption, while 89% is sent to processing factories prior to being sold in local markets and exported. The quantities of P entering the fisheries sector come from captures, import of fisheries products and feed produced from agriculture. This P input to the fisheries sector is found to average 28,506 t P.y−1 based on the past ten-year records. Of this total, P input from captures accounts for 76%; while, 11% represents aquatic feeds from agriculture and animal manures. About 13% is obtained from the imports of fishery products. Coastal and freshwater aquacultures are found to be P consumers because their feeds are almost all produced from agricultural crops grown inland. Moreover, these activities cause most of P losses, approximately 10,188 t P·y−1, which account for 89% of the total P loss from the fisheries sector. Overall, P in the fisheries sector is found to mobilize through three channels: (a) 44% is consumed within the country; (b) about 16% is exported; and, (c) 40% is lost from the ecosystem. Based on the results of this work it is recommended that future research be directed on ways to minimize P loss and maximize P recycle in Thailand's fisheries sector as to enhance its food security and curtail water pollution.

2012
Liu, Xiaodong | Lou, Chuangneng | Xu, Liqiang | Sun, Liguang
Total cadmium (Cd) concentrations in four ornithogenic coral-sand sedimentary profiles displayed a strong positive correlation with guano-derived phosphorus, but had no correlation with plant-originated organic matter in the top sediments. These results indicate that the total Cd distributions were predominantly controlled by guano input. Bioavailable Cd and zinc (Zn) had a greater input rate in the top sediments with respect to total Cd and total Zn, and a positive correlation with total organic carbon (TOC) derived from plant humus. Multi-regression analysis showed that the total Cd and TOC explained over 80% of the variation of bioavailable Cd, suggesting that both guano and plant inputs could significantly influence the distribution of bioavailable Cd, and that plant biocycling processes contribute more to the recent increase of bioavailable Cd. A pollution assessment indicates that the Yongle archipelago is moderately to strongly polluted with guano-derived Cd.

2021
Hossain, Mahmud | Mestrot, Adrien | Norton, Gareth J. | Deacon, Claire | Islam, M Rafiqul | Meharg, Andrew A.
Fertilization with organic matter (farm yard manure and/or rice straw) is thought to enhance arsenic (As) mobilization into soil porewaters, with subsequent As assimilation by rice roots leading to enhanced translocation to the grain. Here, interlinked experiments (field manuring and soil batch culture) were conducted to find the effect of organic matter at a field application rate practiced in Bangladesh (5 t/ha) on As mobilization in soil for paddies impacted by As contaminated groundwater irrigation, a widespread phenomenon in Bangladesh where the experiments were conducted. Total As concentration in a paddy soil (Sonargaon) ranged from 21.9 to 8.1 mg/kg down the soil profile and strongly correlated with TOC content. Arsenic, Fe, Mn, and DOC release into soil solution, and As speciation, are intimately linked to OM amendment, soil depth and temporal variation. Organic matter amendments lead to increased mobilization of As into both soil porewaters and standing surface waters. The As speciation in the porewater was dominated by inorganic As (Asᵢ) (arsenite and arsenate), with traces amounts of methylated species (DMAⱽ and MMAⱽ) only being found with OM amendment. It was noted in field trials that OM fertilization greatly enhanced As mobility to surface waters, which may have major implications for the fate of As in paddy agronomic ecosystems.

2021
Wang, Haoqi | Bi, Xiaotao | Clift, R. (Roland)
This paper provides an example of the kind of analysis needed to support better targeted policies to reduce the environmental impacts of agricultural activities, using the specific case of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to treat animal manure and other agricultural and food wastes in British Columbia (BC). Economic and life cycle environmental performance metrics are estimated to compare integrated and stand-alone systems using the resulting biogas and digestate. Using biogas for heating outperforms purifying it for distribution as renewable natural gas (RNG). However, current policy and energy prices in BC perversely support RNG, making biogas-fired heating systems economically unattractive. The performance of biogas-fired heating system can be improved and their dependence on subsidies reduced by integration with local agricultural activities, exploiting CO₂ and digestate as by-products. Biogenic CO₂, from combustion of the biogas and from mushroom cultivation, can displace natural gas use in producing CO₂-enriched atmospheres to enhance growth rates in greenhouse production. Using digestate as growing media in greenhouses and mushroom cultivation can generate significant revenues but the environmental benefits are nugatory. Co-digestion of food waste can further improve performance by increasing biogas yield. With all extra benefits combined, integrated AD systems can increase both GHG mitigation and revenues by at least 80%. The analysis illustrates the general point that, to avoid perverse outcomes, policy measures must support options based on their actual GHG mitigation benefits, rather than targetting any specific technology.

2021
Lee, S. (Sangho) | Kim, Young-Min | Siddiqui, Muhammad Zain | Park, Young-Kwon
Thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry measurements were taken to examine the kinetic behavior and product distribution on the thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of different types of sewage sludge. Compared to livestock manure sewage sludge (LMSS), municipal sewage sludge (MSS) had larger ash (30.3%) and lower fixed carbon (7.9%) contents. The peak intensities for the 1ˢᵗ decomposition region (200–380 °C) on the derivative thermogravimetric curve of MSS were higher than those of LMSS. In contrast, the peak height in the 2ⁿᵈ temperature region (>380 °C) of MSS was lower than that of LMSS. The activation energy for the pyrolysis of MSS (Avg. 186.5 kJ/mol) was lower than that of LMSS (Avg. 263.4 kJ/mol) over the entire conversion range. MSS produced larger amounts of fatty acids and cholesterol than LMSS. The in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of MSS over HBeta using a pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry also produced larger amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons than LMSS, suggesting that its better feedstock properties strongly influence the final product oil quality.

2021
Wang, Yuntao | Guo, Guanghui | Zhang, Degang | Lei, Mei
Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in agricultural soils threatening ecological security and the quality of agricultural products, and apportion their sources accurately is still a challenging task. Multivariate statistical analysis, GIS mapping, Pb isotopic ratio analysis (IRA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were integrated to apportion the potential sources of heavy metal(loid)s of orchard soil in Karst-regions. Study region soils were moderately contaminated by Cd. Obvious enrichment and moderate contamination level of Cd were found in study region surface soils, followed by As, Zn, and Pb. Correlation analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) indicated Ba, Co, Cr, Ni, V were mainly from natural sources, while As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn were derived from two kinds of anthropogenic sources. Based on Pb isotope composition, atmospheric deposition and livestock manure were the main sources of soil Pb accumulation. Further source identification and quantification results with PMF model and GIS mapping revealed that soil parent materials (46.44%) accounted for largest contribution to the soil heavy metal(loid)s, followed by fertilizer application (31.37%) and mixed source (industrial activity and manure, 22.19%). Uncertainty analysis indicated that the three-factors solution of PMF model was an optimal explanation and the heavy metal(loid) with lower percentage contributions had higher uncertainty. This study results can help to illustrate the sources of heavy metals more accurately in orchard agricultural soils with a clear expected future for further applications.

2020
Staniszewska, Marta | Nehring, Iga | Falkowska, Lucyna | Bodziach, Karina
Bird guano and the faeces of marine mammals appear to be a significant yet undisclosed biotransporter of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in the marine environment. The authors determined the concentration of bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) removed from birds and seals in their droppings into the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk (Southern Baltic Sea). The research was carried out on samples of bird guano collected during the breeding season and after in 2016 at nesting sites, as well as on faecal samples from grey seals (Halichoerus grypus grypus) living in the Seal Centre of the Marine Station in Hel between 2014 and 2018. Measurements were carried out using high performance chromatography with fluorescence detector. Results have shown that the presence of seabird habitats and grey seal colonies in the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk can have an impact on the pollution of the seashore (beach sand, bottom sediment and surface seawater) with phenol derivatives. The concentrations of BPA, 4-t-OP and 4-NP ranged from 0.1 to 32.97 ng∙g⁻¹dw in sediment and beach sand, and from 0.23 to over 800 ng dm⁻³ in seawater. In the cases of bisphenol A and 4-tert-octylphenol safe concentration levels in the waters were exceeded. Bisphenol A concentrations were almost always found to be the highest. This was also noted in bird guano and seal faeces, although it was found to be much higher in the seal faeces - average 10149.79 ng g⁻¹ dw, than in bird guano. An experiment conducted to assess BPA, 4-t-OP, 4-NP leaching from bird guano and seal faeces into seawater, also confirmed the importance of animal excrement in the circulation of these compounds in the marine ecosystem. The highest % of leaching related to BPA was noted at 20 °C and reached 84%. The lowest % of leaching was for 4-nonylphenol (44%).

2019
Zhou, Xi-Yin
Linking water to research on coupled human and natural systems (CHANS) has attracted wide interest as a means of supporting human-natural sustainability. However, most current research does not focus on water environmental properties; instead, it is at the stage of holistic status assessment and measures adjustment from the point of view of the whole study region without revealing the dynamic interaction between human activities and natural processes. This paper establishes an integrated model that combines a System Dynamics model, a Cell Automaton model and a Multiagent Systems model and exploits the potential of the combined model to reveal regions' human-water interaction status during the process of urban evolution, identify the main pollution sources and spatial units, and provide the explicit space-time measurements needed to enhance local human-natural sustainability. The successful application of the integrated model in the case study of Changzhou City, China reveals the following. (1) As the city's development has progressed, the water environment status in some spatial units is still unsatisfactory and may even become more serious, especially in the urban areas of the Urban District and Liyang County. The concentration of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in monitoring section 157 of the Urban District has increased from 36.90 mg/l to 40.84 mg/l. The main source of this increase is the increase in secondary industry. (2) With the application of the spatially explicit measures of the sewage treatment ratio improvement and new sewage plant construction, the water quality in the urban area has significantly improved and now satisfies the water quality standards. The measure of livestock manure utilization enhancement is adopted to improve the spatial units in which livestock is the main pollution source and achieve the goal of water quality improvement. The model can be used to support the sustainable status assessment of human-water interaction and to identify effective measures that can be used to realize human-water sustainability along with social-economic development.

2018
Meghdadi, Aminreza | Javar, Narmin
Spatial and seasonal variations in nitrate contamination are a globally concern. While numerous studies have used δ¹⁵N-NO₃ and δ¹⁸O-NO₃ to elucidate the dominant sources of nitrate in groundwater, this approach has significant limitations due to the overlap of nitrate isotopic ranges and the occurrence of nitrate isotopic fractionation. This study quantitatively assessed the spatial and seasonal variations in the proportional contributions of nitrate sources from different land uses in the Tarom watershed in North-West Iran. To achieve this aim, orthogonal projection of the hydrochemical and isotopic dataset of the principal component analysis (PCA) as well as correlation coefficient matrix (Corr-PCA) were evaluated to reduce the dimensionality of the inter-correlated dataset. Next, a nitrate isotopic biplot accompanied with a Bayesian isotope mixing model (SIAR) were applied to specify the spatial and seasonal trends in the proportional contribution of three dominant sources of nitrate (fertilizers, animal manure and residential waste) in the watershed. Finally, in order to provide a sensitive framework for nitrate source appointment and overcome the associated limitations of dual nitrate isotope application, the integration of boron isotope (δ¹¹B) and strontium isotopic ratio (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) was introduced. The results revealed that the mean contribution of residential sewage increased (17%–27.5%), while the mean contribution of fertilizers decreased (28.3%–19%), from late spring to early autumn. Also, fertilizer was the highest contributor (42.1% ± 3.2) during late spring, especially in regions with more than 75% agricultural land. Meanwhile, the mean contribution of sewage was highest in early autumn (32.1% ± 2.8) in the areas with more than 20% residential land. These results were confirmed by coupled application of δ¹¹B and ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr. This study provides a useful insight for environmental managers to verify groundwater pollution contributors and to better apply remedial solutions.
