Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are chemical analogs, but their behaviors in plants are different. To investigate the Sb uptake, translocation and speciation in As-hyperaccumulator P. cretica, a hydroponic experiment was conducted. In this study, P. cretica was exposed to 0.2-strength Hoagland nutrient solution, which contained 0.5 or 5 mg/L antimonite (SbIII) or antimonate (SbV). After 14 d exposure, P. cretica took up 1.4–2.8 times more SbIII than SbV. Since P. cretica was unable to translocate Sb, its roots accumulated >97% Sb with the highest at 7965 mg/kg. In both SbIII and SbV treatments, SbIII was the predominant species in P. cretica, with 90–100% and 46–100% SbIII in the roots. As the first barrier against Sb to enter plant cells, more Sb was accumulated in cell wall than cytosol or organelles. The results suggest that P. cretica may detoxify Sb by reducing SbV to SbIII and immobilizing it in root cell walls. Besides, the presence of SbIII significantly reduced the concentrations of dissolved organic C including organic acids in P. cretica root exudates. Further, increasing Sb levels promoted P accumulation in the plant, especially in the fronds, which may help P. cretica growth. The information from this study shed light on metabolic transformation of Sb in As-hyperaccumulators P. cretica, which helps to better understand Sb uptake and detoxification by plants.

We aimed to explore the effects of mixtures of lead and various metals on blood pressure (BP) and the odds of pre-hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP) 120–139 mmHg, and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 80–89 mmHg) and hypertension (SBP/DBP ≥140/90 mmHg) among Chinese adults in a cross-sectional study. This study included 11,037 adults aged 18 years or older from the 2017–2018 China National Human Biomonitoring. Average BP and 13 metals (lead, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, thallium, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, selenium, and tin) in blood and urine were measured and lifestyle and demographic data were collected. Weighted multiple linear regressions were used to estimate associations of metals with BP in both single and multiple metal models. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was performed to assess the relationship between metal mixture levels and BP. In the single metal model, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the blood lead levels in the highest quartile were associated with the greater odds of both pre-hypertension (odds ratio (OR): 1.56, 95% CI: 1.22–1.99) and hypertension (OR:1.75, 95% CI: 1.28–2.40) when compared with the lowest quartile. We also found that blood arsenic levels were associated with increased odds of pre-hypertension (OR:1.31, 95% CI:1.00–1.74), while urinary molybdenum levels were associated with lower odds of hypertension (OR:0.68, 95% CI:0.50–0.93). No significant associations were found for the other 10 metals. WQS regression analysis showed that metal mixture levels in blood were significantly associated with higher SBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05) and DBP (β = 1.56, P < 0.05), with the largest contributor being lead (49.9% and 66.8%, respectively). The finding suggests that exposure to mixtures of metals as measured in blood were positively associated with BP, and that lead exposure may play a critical role in hypertension development.

Assessing the bioavailability of various Sb substances plays a crucial role in human health and the ecological risk assessment of contaminated soils. However, fate, behaviour and bioavailability of different Sb compounds in soils are insufficiently known. Therefore, in this present study, the effects of soil properties and ageing on bioavailability of four different Sb compounds (C₈H₄K₂O₁₂Sb₂, Sb₂S₃, Sb₂O₃ and Sb₂O₃ nanoparticles) were evaluated during 120 days ageing time. A black soil (BS) with approximately 12% organic matter (OM) and a red soil (RS) with less than 1% OM were amended with 1000 mg Sb kg⁻¹ of different Sb compounds and subjected to single extractions with distilled (DI) water, 2M HNO₃, Simplified Bioaccessibility Extraction Test (SBET) and a modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method. The results revealed that there are substantial variations in dissolution rate of various Sb sources, depending upon soil type and Sb compound. The amounts of DI water extractability of Sb during the incubation time varied between <1% and 2%, whereas HNO₃ extractable fractions and Sb bioaccessibility at the end of ageing time ranged between about 1%-3% and <1%–9% of the total Sb, with maximum bioaccessibility observed in BS contaminated with C₈H₄K₂O₁₂Sb₂. The residual and labile fractions accounted for 77–93% and 0.1–4% of the total Sb, respectively, indicating that Sb is mostly associated with recalcitrant fractions of the soils. The results of single and sequential extraction studies revealed that source of Sb, ageing time and soil properties can greatly affect the bioavailability of Sb in soils. The findings of this research provide a deeper understanding of the potential risks associated with Sb compounds and highlights the role of site-specific considerations for improving the robustness of toxicity guidelines and long-term management of Sb contaminated sites.

In order to determine the current levels, spatial distribution patterns, and potential pollution of trace elements (TEs) in the atmosphere of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), snow pit samples were collected in May 2016 from five TP glaciers: Qiyi (QY), Hariqin (HRQ), Meikuang (MK), Yuzhufeng (YZF), and Xiaodongkemadi (XDKMD). Concentrations of 13 TEs (Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Pb, Sb, Sr, U, and Zn) in the snow were measured. The spatial distribution patterns and depth profiles of TEs from the studies sites revealed that the influence of dust on TEs was more significant on the MK and YZF glaciers than on the QY, HRQ, and XDKMD glaciers. The spatial distributions of TE EFFₑ values differed from their concentrations, however. The enrichment factor (EF) values and concentrations of some TEs in the YZF, QY, and XDKMD glaciers revealed that the pollution levels of these elements were significantly lower than those found in previous research. Examination based on EFs, principal component analysis, as well as the calculated non-dust contributions of TEs, revealed that dust was the principal source for most TEs in all five glaciers, while biomass burning was another potential natural source for TEs in some glaciers, such as QY. In contrast, Cd, Ba, Sr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Sb were occasionally affected by anthropogenic sources such as road traffic emissions, fossil fuel combustion, and mining and smelting of nonferrous metals in and beyond the TP. Air mass backward trajectories revealed that potential pollutants were transported not only from local sources but also from Xinjiang Province in northwestern China, as well as South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Natural sources, such as soil and wind-erosion dust (SWD), biomass open burning (BOB), sea salt spray (SSAS) and biogenic source (BIO), are major contributors to atmospheric emissions of trace elements (TEs) globally. In this study, we used a comprehensive approach to account for area-, production- and biofuel consumption-based emission factor calculation methods, and thus developed an integrated high-resolution emission inventory for 15 types of TEs (As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V and Zn) originated from natural sources in China for the year 2015. The results show that national emissions of TEs in 2015 range from 7.45 tons (Hg) to 1, 400 tons (Zn) except for the extremely high emissions of Mn (10, 677 tons). SWD and BIO are identified as the top two source contributors, accounting for approximately 67.7% and 26.1% of the total emissions, respectively. Absolute emissions of TEs from natural sources are high in the Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions with large areas of bare soil and desert. However, emission intensity of TEs per unit area in the Southern provinces of China is higher than those in Northern China and Southwestern China, with the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces displaying the highest emission intensity. Our results suggest that controlling SWD can play a significant role in reducing fugitive particulate matter and the associated emissions of TEs from natural sources in China; and desertification control is particularly critical in the Northwest provinces where the majority of deserts are located.

Egodawatta, Lakmini P. | Holland, Aleicia | Koppel, Darren | Jolley, Dianne F.
Antimony (Sb) is an emerging contaminant and until recently it was assumed to behave in a similar way to arsenic (As). Arsenic and Sb often co-occur in contaminated sites, yet most investigations consider their toxicity to plants singly. More research is needed to understand the interactions between As and Sb in soils and plants. This study investigated the interactive effect of As and Sb in terms of soil bioavailability, plant toxicity and bioaccumulation on the commercially important agricultural plant, water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) using a pot experiment. Plants were exposed to As and Sb individually (As ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎, Sb ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎) and as a mixture (As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎) at different concentrations. Plant growth was measured using shoot and root dry mass, length and chlorophyll a content of leaves. At the end of the bioassay, bioavailable metalloids were extracted from the soil as per a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) and plant tissue was analysed for metalloid content. For As, there were no differences observed between the bioavailability of As in the As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎ and As ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎ treatments. For Sb, no increase in bioavailability was observed with co-contamination compared to single-Sb exposures for most concentrations except at 1250 mg/kg. Single-Sb was not toxic to I. aquatica shoot dry mass and length, but there was greater shoot Sb accumulation in the As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎ than the Sb ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎ treatment. In contrast, single-As was toxic to I. aquatica growth. When As and Sb were present together in the soil, there was a synergistic toxicity to shoot dry mass (EC₅₀ Toxic Unit (TU) was less than 1) and additive toxicity (EC₅₀ equal to 1 TU) to shoot length. This work shows that the co-occurrence of As and Sb in soil increases Sb bioavailability and can cause synergistic toxicity to an important agricultural crop.

Thallium (Tl) is a trace metal of severe toxicity. Its health concerns via consumption of contaminated vegetables have often been overlooked or underestimated. This study was designed to gain insight into the actual level and distribution characteristics of Tl and metal (loid)s (Pb, Cd, Cr, Sb, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co) in agricultural soils and common vegetables cultivated in different zones (upstream, midstream, and downstream) of a densely populated residential area in a typical mine city, which has been open-pit exploiting Tl-bearing pyrite minerals since 1960s. The results show that most of the agricultural soils exhibit contaminated levels of Tl, with Tl contents (upstream: 1.35–4.31 mg/kg, midstream: 2.43–5.19 mg/kg, and downstream: 0.65–2.33 mg/kg) mostly exceeding the maximum permissible level (MPL) for agricultural land use (1 mg/kg). Sequential extraction procedure indicates that even Tl is predominantly retained in the residual fraction, significant levels of Tl are still present in the geochemically mobile fractions. Besides, metals like Cu, Cd, Mn, and Co are mostly distributed in the labile fractions. Almost all metal (loid)s in edible parts of the vegetables exceed their corresponding MPL for consumption. The chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) values calculated for inhabitants at different ages indicate non-negligible Tl risks via consumption of local vegetables, especially for children. Therefore, it is critical to establish effective measures for hazardous waste management and enforceable regulations in Tl-polluted area to mitigate potential severe impacts of Tl on human health through food chain.

Mercury-antimony (HgSb) mining activities are important anthropogenic sources of Hg and Sb to the local environment. The Xunyang HgSb mine situated in Shaanxi Province is an active Hg mine in China. To understand the emission, transportation, and deposition of Sb through HgSb mining activities, current study systematically monitored the Sb concentration in precipitation in the Xunyang HgSb mining district. Five groups of experimental pots were carefully designed to further investigate the influence of HgSb mining activities on the Sb contamination in the local surface soil. Based on the overtime increasing of the Sb concentrations in soil from experimental pots, for the first trial, we estimated the atmospheric deposition flux/mass of Sb in the Xunyang HgSb mining district. Our results showed that the concentrations of Sb in precipitation in the Xunyang HgSb mining district ranged from 0.71 μg L−1 to 19 μg L−1 (mean = 4.2 ± 4.5 μg L−1), which was orders of magnitude higher than that at the control site. As expected, the concentration of Sb in precipitation was highly elevated near of the HgSb smelter and gradually decreased with distance from the smelter. After 12 months exposure, Sb concentrations in soil of experimental pots were increased by 1.2–8.5 times. The average atmospheric wet and dry deposition flux of Sb in the Xunyang HgSb mining district were 7.2 ± 6.9 μg m−2 day−1 and 2.1 ± 4.7 mg m−2 day−1, respectively; the annual wet and dry deposition mass of Sb through HgSb mining activities were estimated to be 1.6 t y−1 and 158 t y−1, respectively, indicating that dry deposition was the dominant pathway (98 ± 1.2%) for the removal of Sb from the atmosphere. Our results confirmed that the ongoing HgSb mining activities resulted to serious Sb contamination to terrestrial ecosystems, posing a potential threat to local residents in the Xunyang HgSb mining district.

Birnessites are abundant naturally occurring minerals with high sorption and oxidation capacity that could therefore play an important role in antimony (Sb) migration and transformation. There are various types of birnessites in the environment. However, little is known about the similarities and differences in Sb oxidation and sorption on birnessites with different properties. In this study, the behavior of Sb oxidation and sorption on two contrasting birnessites (δ-MnO₂ and triclinic birnessite (TrBir)) were investigated via batch and kinetic experiments and various spectroscopic techniques. Our results showed that the reaction mechanisms between Sb and the two birnessites were similar. The edge sites of birnessites were responsible for Sb(III) oxidation. Mn(IV) was reduced to Mn(III) and Mn(II), bound with birnessites and released to the solution, respectively. Because of the rapid rate of electron transfer of adsorbed Sb(III) to birnessites, the only Sb species on δ-MnO₂ after the oxidation reaction was Sb(V). Sb(V) was adsorbed at the edge sites of birnessites by replacing the OH group of birnessites, forming corner-sharing complexes with birnessites. However, the Sb sorption and oxidation capacities of the two birnessites were significantly different. Poorly-crystallized δ-MnO₂ exhibited a much higher oxidation and sorption capacity than well-crystallized TrBir because the former had many more edge sites than the latter. This study reveals the general mechanism of the reaction between Sb and birnessite and indicates that birnessite with a high number of edge sites would exhibit a huge capacity in Sb oxidation and sorption.

Wu, Qihang | Leung, Jonathan Y.S. | Du, Yongming | Kong, Deguan | Shi, Yongfeng | Wang, Yuqi | Xiao, Tangfu
Despite the endeavour to eradicate informal e-waste recycling, remediation of polluted sites is not mandatory in many developing countries and thus the hazard of pollutants remaining in soil is often overlooked. It is noteworthy that a majority of previous studies only analysed a few pollutants in e-waste to reflect the impact of informal e-waste recycling. However, the actual impact may have been largely underestimated since e-waste contains various groups of pollutants and the effect of some emerging pollutants in e-waste remains unexplored. Thus, this study examined the contamination of metals, PBDEs and AHFRs in the vicinity of an abandoned e-waste recycling site. The accumulation and translocation of these pollutants in rice plants cultivated at the nearby paddy field were measured to estimate the health risk through rice consumption. We revealed that the former e-waste burning site was still seriously contaminated with some metals (e.g. Sn, Sb and Ag, Igₑₒ > 5), PBDEs (Igₑₒ > 3) and AHFRs (Igₑₒ > 3), which can disperse to the nearby paddy field and stream. The rice plants can effectively absorb some metals (e.g. Mo, Cr and Mn, BCF > 1), but not PBDEs and AHFRs (BCF < 0.15), from soil and translocate them to the leaves. Alarmingly, the health risk through rice consumption was high primarily due to Sb and Sn (HQ > 20), whereas PBDEs and AHFRs had limited contribution (HQ < 0.08). Our results imply that abandoned e-waste recycling sites still act as the pollution source, jeopardising the surrounding environment and human health. Since some trace metals (e.g. Sb and Sn) are seldom monitored, the impact of informal e-waste recycling would be more notorious than previously thought. Remediation work should be conducted promptly in abandoned e-waste recycling sites to protect the environment and human health.
