Ecotoxicity of the veterinary pharmaceutical ivermectin tested in a soil multi-species (SMS) system
2012
Jensen, John | Scott-Fordsmand, Janeck J.
The present study tests the effect of antiparasitic compound ivermectin in a constructed food-web system, a soil multi-species (SMS) higher tier test system. Mutualism, competition and predation within the SMS system were introduced by the addition of five collembolan species, one enchytraeid and a predatory mite species. Bait lamina sticks were incorporated as a measure of functional toxicity, attempting to the integrated feeding activity of the invertebrates. The study showed that on the community level all treatments were significantly affecting the community abundance and composition and that the decrease in abundance corresponded well with increasing exposure concentration for all species. Since all concentrations had significant adverse effect on the community structure, the community-based no-effect-concentration is below the lowest test concentration of 0.25 mg kg⁻¹, whereas the EC10 for the individual species were as low as 0.05 mg kg⁻¹. The bait lamina respond was only affected at the highest exposure concentration.

2013
A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous analysis of 6 ectoparasiticides – 2 synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin, cypermethrin) and 4 macrocyclic lactones (abamectin, doramectin, ivermectin and eprinomectin) in biosolids. The method was used to investigate the occurrence of these ectoparasiticides in beef cattle feedlot wastes in Australia from 5 commercial feedlot operations which employ varying waste management practices. Deltamethrin and cypermethrin were not detected in any of the samples while abamectin, ivermectin, doramectin and eprinomectin were detected in some of the samples with concentrations ranging from 1 to 36 μg/kg dry weight (d.w.) freeze dried feedlot waste. Levels of macrocyclic lactones detected in the feedlot wastes varied and were dependent on sample type. The effect of seasonal variations and waste management practices were also investigated in this study.

Growth of the aquaculture industry has triggered the need for research into the potential environmental impact of chemicals used by salmon farms to control diseases. In this study, the antiparasitic pesticides emamectin benzoate (EB), diflubenzuron (DI), teflubenzuron (TE), and cypermethrin (CP) were measured in sediments near salmon cages in southern Chile. Concentrations for EB were between 2.2 and 14.6ngg−1, while the benzoylphenyl ureas DI and TE were detected in the ranges of 0.1 to 1.2ngg−1 and 0.8 to 123.3ngg−1, respectively. These results were similar to data reported for the Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, the pyrethroid CP was detected in higher concentrations, ranging from 18.0 to 1323.7ngg−1. According to reported toxicity data, this range represents a potential risk for benthic invertebrates. This report is the first baseline attempt at assessing antiparasitic pesticide levels in the Chilean Patagonia.

Nowadays there are various groups of biocidal chemical agents, which can be used in diverse areas, such as personal hygiene, disinfection, antiparasitic action, and also in antifouling mixtures or paints. The versatility and efficacy of some of these agents favors their use and ultimate release into the aquatic environment, where they may still exert toxic activity. Zinc pyrithione is classified as a metal biocide with bactericidal, algicidal, and fungicidal actions. It has been formulated in antifouling paints, which prevent the formation of biofilms in submerged structures, and has also been used for dermocosmetic purposes, in shampoos for the treatment of dandruff and seborrhea. Some of the uses of zinc pyrithione are responsible for its direct release as flakes that reach the bottom sediments, especially in estuarine areas. Considering this fate, the ecotoxicity assessment of its effects towards sediment organisms, namely Polychaetous species, is extremely important. The present study characterized the acute potential toxicity of zinc pyrithione in terms of parameters of oxidative stress (catalase, glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)), and neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase) which were evaluated in individuals of the polychaete Hediste diversicolor. Regarding the results obtained, only the activity of GSTs and AChE was significantly altered in relation to non-exposed animals. This set of results indicates that oxidative stress did not occur.
